The Gasplasma process: its application in enhanced landfill mining

Abstract

A key component in the ELFM concept is the provision of an advanced thermal conversion technology as an integral part of the process. The two stage thermal Gasplasma™ process developed by APP is designed to produce both a refined syngas which is capable of being fed directly to a gas engine for the efficient recovery of energy and an environmentally stable, vitrified slag with end-use as an aggregate material. The process has been developed primarily for treating Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and trade waste although it has been practically demonstrated on a range of other waste material arisings including fuels derived from landfill waste. This paper describes and discusses key operating results obtained from the APP demonstration facility. Reference is made to its potential application as a part of the ELFM concept.
