Solar lights are not a common part of life or lighting in many households but they are gaining a bit of ground. Most of them are used outdoors and this means that they will definitely get dirty after a while. These lights require regular maintenance but the fact that these lights are placed outside means that you will probably check on them less often.
You will find no moving parts in a solar lighting system so cleaning becomes rather easy and comes once in a while. It does not matter if your lighting system is on a raised ground or the area you live in rains a lot because dirt will still accumulate. You should therefore be sure to clean it at least once a year for it to be at optimum performance levels throughout.
Do it early
Solar panels and lights will get hot during the day when the sun is high. This will make it very difficult to clean them so you are better off doing it early in the morning. The panels will especially get very hot since they are designed to absorb sunlight.
Use soap and water
Getting dirt off these panels may be a little difficult considering it is not done on a regular basis. You should therefore start by hosing down the panel. This will loosen any type of dirt that is stuck on it and may be tough for you to remove.
Once that is done you should make a solution of soap and water and then pour it on the area that you want to clean. You can use a brush with soft bristles to get off any other difficult debris. A brush with tough bristles will scratch the surface of the panel and damage it.
Hose it down once again after scrubbing it with soap so that you get all the dirt and soap out of it. When all the soap is out you should make sure it dries it completely. No marks should be left on it because they will interfere a little with the absorption of sunlight and they will also be hideous to look at.
Check for damage
After cleaning is done do a thorough inspection of the rest of the solar lighting system. Look at wire connections and fix any that are worn out or naked. There should be no naked wires because this will affect how the whole unit works.
Replace any broken or malfunctioning items as well. If it has been between 5 and 7 years you should replace the battery just to make sure your system performs at optimum levels.
Cleaning and general maintenance of a solar lighting system does not require any expertise at all since it is not complicated. You do not need to call a technician of any kind unless you run into a problem or you have any questions.
You should not hesitate to call the manufacturer though if there is any hitch because they would know best how to handle a difficulty since it is their product.
