Towards sustainable water resource management: a case study in Limassol Cyprus
Sustainable water resource management has become critical in the development of areas where renewable freshwater resources are highly constrained. This paper describes a new methodological approach of integrated water management strategy, based on the principles of Integrated Water Resources Management together with the provisions of the EU Water Framework Directive. The method was successfully applied in the Limassol area of Cyprus and helped to counteract the growing demands for water by the permanent and seasonal population and traditional agriculture. The aquifers of the region were protected as groundwater exploitation was kept to sustainable levels, while the water supply to the region was stabilised. Two different strategies were formulated resulting from a tentative timeframe of water management options combination including hard (structural) and soft (non structural) measures.
