UASB-CFID system: energy efficient technology for sewage treatment and reuse

The UASB-CFID system was investigated through laboratory experiments as an alternative method of treatment to existing UASB based STPs for the treatment. Excellent quality effluent was obtained having BOD and TSS below the disposal standards of India. In conventional treatment methods, lot of energy is wasted and also they generate harmful byproducts. The estimated life cycle cost of UASB-CFID system for 15 years is 1405.44 crores for 10 MLD sewage treatment plant, which is lowest compared to other systems, the main credit goes to the low operation and maintenance cost due to the 70% reduction in energy/electricity cost in anaerobic pre-treatment (UASB). Therefore, the system is economically feasible and can be used at full scale level or to upgrade the existing STPs because it is energy efficient method as it uses energy generated by UASB reactor in form of biogas.
