UK companies help to divert waste from landfill in the Middle East
The Middle East is a thriving area and, as a major producer of the world’s oil and gas supplies, is also rich in natural resources. The exploitation of these resources, together with the increase in associated industries, carries with it significant environmental challenges. The need for appropriate environmental management is becoming increasingly important and environmental regulations in many countries across the region have developed significantly in recent years. The Middle East’s commitments under the Kyoto Protocol have led to a carbon market in the region. Projects that result in reduced greenhouse gas emissions are becoming popular as a means of securing additional revenue. Such projects can provide Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) under the UN-administered Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).
