This white paper by SGS, aims to provide an insight into the issues associated with the sustainable sourcing and production of biofuels.
This document aims to provide an insight into the issues associated with the sustainable production of biofuels. It discusses the contents of the 2009 European Renewable Energy Directive (2009/28/EC) along with the subsequent European Commission Communications (June 2010), which relate to the implementation of sustainability schemes. It also covers the October, 2012, European Commission announcement about proposed amendments to the Directive, aiming to limit global land use conversion for biofuel production at the same time as increasing the climatic benefits of the biofuels that are in widespread use. Following this it details the thirteen sustainability schemes to date, that have been approved by the European Commission as covering all the criteria specified in the 2009 European Renewable Energy Directive.
