Urban mining – the hunt for hidden treasures

Thanks in no small measure to legislative developments, the European Union as a whole is now recycling more than a third of its household refuse, although the performances of individual nations are decidedly mixed. This article focuses on the recent steps taken in Germany - the EU’s most populous nation - to boost the recycling of domestic refuse and post-consumer goods. The country’s declared aim is to stimulate recycling and treatment of waste to the extent that, by 2020, all the valuable materials and energy resources contained in waste will be fully utilised.
