Use of Barley Straw for Algal Reduction in Sewage Lagoons – Operational Considerations

0
Pecos began use of barley straw as a clarification aid in June 2005 to determine its effectiveness as part of a phased treatment plant replacement. Phase I includes construction of a new UV system that will disinfect effluent received directly from Lagoon No. 3. However, this phasing would place a heavy TSS loading on the UV system. As barley decomposes, a chemical is emitted that inhibits algal growth and provides clarification of the lagoon treatment system effluent. Little is known about the actual mechanism in the use of barley straw as a clarification agent, but if successful, this is a process that is universally applicable in small treatment systems.
