Use of Lime Stabilized Biosolids for Turf Grass Production in the New Jersey Pinelands

0
A 700 acre farm producing turf grass sod for residential and commercial uses has been utilizing liquid, lime stabilized biosolids as its primary source of plant macronutrients on approximately 380 acres since late 1995. The farm is located within the New Jersey Pinelands, a sensitive and unique ecosystem characterized by pine-oak forests, sandy soils and high quality ground and surface waters. The use of biosolids reduced the amount of inorganic, commercial fertilizers used in sod production by an initial 76%, with an additional 12% reduction over the past few years. This has led to improvements in groundwater nitrate concentrations in several downgradient monitoring wells and an annual cost savings of approximately $23,000.
