Waste Management in Sparsely Populated Arctic Areas

Waste management practices are dynamic and space-specific. The Finnish environment is not uniform; no practice would fit to every corner of the country. Therefore, there is a need for specific regional research. The paper reports on a multidisciplinary collaboration that aims at solving waste problems in special northern conditions. The adoption of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive is investigated. A great emphasis is laid on raising public awareness and the logistics of waste management. The researches are conducted in co-operation with a local waste collection company and a housing company.
