The composition of wastewater from dairy processing plants makes it highly suitable for biological wastewater treatment processing. As well anaerobic biological treatment of the wastewater there is also the option of applying anaerobic biological processes. By applying anaerobic technology a large part of the organic load in the wastewater can be removed and converted into energy-rich biogas. In addition, the anaerobic technology can be used in dairies to produce biogas from waste whey. The biogas which is generated can be used to produce electrical and/or thermal energy.

Several powerful incentives are driving biogas generators to consider upgrading their biogas to meet standards for pipeline injection and vehicle fuel markets. Producing renewable natural gas (RNG) can create opportunities to monetize lucrative RIN, or renewable identification number, credits under the federal Renewable Fuel Standard and generate carbon credits under state supported low carbon fuel standards.
As each biogas project is unique it can be a challenge to determine the best gas upgrading technology...
Up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) has been in use since last few decades for the treatment of organic wastewaters. However, the performance of UASB reactor is quite low for treatment of low strength wastewaters (LSWs) due to less biogas production leading to poor mixing. In the present research work, a modification was done in the design of UASB to improve mixing of reactor liquid which is important to enhance the reactor performance. The modified UASB (MUASB) reactor was designed by providing a slanted...
Combining aerobic and anaerobic digestion in a two-stage system can improve the degradation of wastewater sludge over the use of either technology alone. But use of aerobic digestion as a pre-treatment before anaerobic digestion generally reduces methane production due to loss of substrate through oxidation. An inter-stage configuration may avoid this reduction in methane production. Here, we evaluated the use of thermophilic aerobic digestion (TAD) as an inter-stage treatment for wastewater sludge using laboratory...
The biogas project for domestic sewage treatment (BPDST) is considered a promising facility for wastewater management in rural areas of China. This paper explores previous experimental works, cost analysis, and BPDST structure and design based on Chinese literature. Opportunities for developing decentralized or neighborhood-based BPDSTs include fulfilling Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the water pollution situation and deficiency of wastewater treatment facilities,...
