What are geotextiles made of?
Geotextile refers to the woven geotextile fabrics/non-woven geotextile fabrics punched by needles, which can be used for separation, filtration, reinforcement, protection, drainage, etc. It is a popular geotechnical material in civic and engineering projects, for example: it is an essential material to protect geomembrane in landfilling projects; also, it is inevitable for road, bridge and tunnel projects, to protect surface, to filter stones and sands; besides, it can be used for landscaping projects to prevent roots and weeds growth...and so on, thus it is a used all over the world.
The main raw materials of geotextile are polyester (PET) and polypropylene (PP), the difference between these two kinds of geotextile is: the geotextiles made of PET can be used for most of the applications. It is more cost-effective, because the price is cheaper, at the same time, it can meet the requirements for most of the engineering projects; by contrast, the price of geotextiles made of PP is a little bit higher, because the property is stronger, the property to resist alkali and acid, in particular, will be much more stronger than the geotextiles; as a result, some projects like sea coastal conservation, aluminium factory and salting industry, etc., PP geotextile will be given the first priority to consider.
The best and easiest way to recognize the differences of PET Geotextile and PP Geotextile is to check its density. If geotextile is made from 100% virgin polyester or polypropylene, then the density of the geotextile is fixed. The density of 100% PET Geotextile is less than 1, which means it is lighter than water, if a small piece of PET Geotextile is put into water, it will keep floating on the surface of water; yet, if a small piece of PP Geotextile is dipped into water, it will go to the bottom of water . Another means to tell the difference from PET Geotextile and PP Geotextile is burning to inspect. If a piece of PET Geotextile is burned, the smell is strong for human, and the ash color is in black; by contrast, there is not much smelling from the burning of PP Geotextile, what’s more, the ash color from burned 100% Virgin PP Geotextile is transparent, which means the property of PP Geotetxile is more stable and much stronger than PET Geotextile, it has higher yield strength and stronger environment stress cracking, thus, it can be used in high-demanding engineering projects. There is no need to have to sale PP Geotextile for higher property, different projects have unique requirements about the geotextile, PET Geotextile can meet the requirements for most of the cases.
The raw material of geotextile adopted by our company are all 100% virgin material, using special high strength polyester chip as raw material, which is helpful to assure the high permeability coefficient, breaking strength, CBR and tearing strength, as a consequence, it is difficult to deform and decompose, and can keep the original properties for a long period of time.
