In 2000 the member states of the United Nations passed the Millennium Declaration, which led to the adoption of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to cut extreme poverty in its many dimensions - hunger, disease, gender inequality, lack of education, and accelerating environmental degradation. The Goals set quantitative objectives to be achieved by 2015 and spell out the responsibilities of rich countries to support poor countries through aid, debt relief, and improved market access.
