Why 2017 is LG Sonic’s best year yet
2017 was another successful year for LG Sonic. The company’s revenue grew for the fifth consecutive year and with new MPC-Buoy installations in Belgium, United Kingdom, Ecuador, Peru and United States, LG Sonic is now running MPC-Buoy algae control projects in more than 17 countries worldwide. Next year will see the introduction of MPC-Lab, this system will combine the most innovative methods for real-time water quality monitoring such as wet-chemical methods to measure in-situ Phosphate and Ammonium.
In 2017 a growth in revenue was achieved for the fifth consecutive year, and LG Sonic welcomed new employees in the sales and research and development department to help grow the company even further. LG Sonic announced Ian Taylor as official service provider in the United Kingdom. In May 2017, LG Sonic introduced the option to measure nitrate (NOз) concentrations in water bodies for algae prediction and pollution detection.
Worldwide algae control without chemicals
LG Sonic MPC-Buoy, a floating solar-powered system that uses ultrasound to control algal blooms, is now installed in more than 17 countries worldwide. Water Online listed LG Sonic MPC-Buoy again as one of the ten Water-tech winners of WEFTEC 2017, the largest water exhibition and conference in Northern America. In 2017 new MPC-Buoy projects were installed in Belgium, United Kingdom, Ecuador, Peru and the United States. In the United States, LG Sonic continued to cooperate with American Water, America’s largest drinking water company, to control algal growth at Coatesville reservoir in Pennsylvania.
Data driven water treatment
The MPC-Buoy solution combines ultrasound technology and real-time water quality monitoring. Water quality data allows to adjust the ultrasonic treatment to specific water conditions. In 2017, LG Sonic water treatment specialists received over 230 million water quality data sets. Combined with Remote Sensing data which measures amongst other parameters, Chlorophyll a and Phycocyanine, LG Sonic can monitor, predict and control algal blooms before they become a problem.
Care for our environment
At LG Sonic, it has always been our objective to reduce or eliminate harmful chemicals in our environment. By using the environmentally friendly ultrasonic sound waves instead of chemicals, more than 30 trucks of harmful chemicals were saved. With the use of solar-power as a power source for the MPC-Buoy systems, more than 20.000 kg in CO2 emissions is prevented.
90% algae reduction
In Auckland, New Zealand, 5 solar powered algae control devices were installed in December 2016 to control algae in a drinking water reservoir. One year after the installation, the project appeared to be a great success. The blue-green algae levels were reduced by 90% over summer compared to the previous year.
What is next?
2018 will see the result of a European Consortium, which received €2,2m in funding and is coordinated by LG Sonic, to offer a solution to control sea lice in open finfish production. A first feasibility study has proven ultrasound technology can reduce sea lice attached to salmon by 60%.
With the development of MPC-Lab, LG Sonic continues to innovate. This system will combine the most innovative methods for real-time water quality monitoring such as wet-chemical methods to measure in-situ Phosphate and Ammonium. MPC-Lab can be pre-set to take samples from different depths in a water body, and measure any parameters real-time on the buoy itself.
