Assessing the Hazard of Metals and Inorganic Metal Substances in Aquatic and Terrestrial Systems

Are persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity adequate and appropriate criteria for determining the hazard posed by metals and inorganic metal substances entering the environment? If not, what is a reasonable and scientifically-defensible alternative? This overriding question brought together 47 scientists, managers, and policymakers from 7 countries for a Pellston Workshop convened by the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) in Pensacola, Florida, USA. They in fact found that the individual PBT critieria are limited in their ability to assess hazard for metals and inorganic metal substances. They recommended instead that a critical load modeling approach, termed the 'Unit World Model' (UWM), which integrates appropriate components of PBT into a consolidated framework be used. Details of the UWM applicable to both aquatic and terrestrial environments are provided herein.
