American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH)

The ABIH is an independent not-for-profit 501(c)6 organization, incorporated in 1960 by the State of Pennsylvania, devoted solely to the purpose of certification of industrial hygiene professionals. ABIH is governed by its own set of By-Laws. There are no formal relationships with any other organization to nominate or appoint people to serve on the ABIH Board of Directors. From time to time, ABIH enters into agreements or collaborative efforts with other organizations (e.g., AIHA, OHTA) where there are common interests (e.g. ethics awareness, IH promotions, certification research) but at no time does ABIH relinquish its decision-making authority for matters involving the operation of the ABIH.

The ABIH administers the Certified Industrial Hygienist® (CIH®) credential, which is a means to objectively assess and measure the professional knowledge and understanding of practitioners engaged in industrial hygiene.

ABIH Overview:

In order to become a CIH, each Applicant must satisfy all educational, experience practice and other eligibility requirements established by the ABIH Board of Directors, and then must pass the Comprehensive Practice examination.  Once certified by ABIH, Diplomates maintain their certification by successfully participating in the Certification Maintenance (CM) program which includes an on-going commitment to follow the ABIH Code of Ethics.

ABIH will evaluate all applicants, examinees, Diplomates and former Diplomates using the criteria set for CIH eligibility or certification and will not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, national origin, religion, age, disability, political affiliation, sex, sexual orientation, or marital, parental, military, or any other legally protected status. ABIH requirements for eligibility, certification, recertification or reactivation are applied fairly, impartially and consistently in accordance with ABIH policies and applicable laws.  ABIH policies and programs for initial certification, recertification and reactivation will be administered without regard to individual membership or non-membership in any organization, association or other group. 

ABIH's staff, volunteers and contracted-for services are committed to upholding the policies and procedures of ABIH to the best of their abilities. To demonstrate this commitment, these individuals are required to sign the ABIH Statement of Confidentiality, Assignment and Conflict of Interest form unless alternately covered by their own organization's confidentiality commitments and their legal contract with ABIH.  Exam Reviewers and Writers are required to sign a separate Security Agreement form. (Both forms are in the Document Library).

Documentation and information submitted to ABIH in support of its certification programs are treated as confidential, as specified in the ABIH Privacy Policy. All reasonable precautions are taken to prevent unauthorized access to individual information. ABIH does not disclose personal information obtained to third parties, except when authorized by the individual or if necessary to complete an ABIH process, e.g., arranging for an examinee to sit for the exam.
