About Us
Analytical Services, Inc. (ASI) is a full service environmental microbiology laboratory located in Williston, VT. Incorporated in 1993, our primary business is serving the public water supply industry with microbiological testing, research and consulting services.
WATER SUPPLY - ASI is engaged in water supply projects ranging from source water (LT2 compliance monitoring, watershed assessment/pathogen surveys, fecal contamination source tracking, groundwater monitoring, etc.) to treatment (treatment plant optimization, filtration efficiency and disinfection efficacy studies, product evaluation, etc.) to distribution system issues (coliform positive investigations and biofilm/regrowth studies, nuisance organisms, Legionella detection / legionellosis risk assessment and microbial identification). ASI also provides services to related industries, including wastewater / water re-use and biosolids.
LEGIONELLA - ASI provides complete Legionella testing and consulting services. Our expert team can help you asess your legionellosis risk, review your facility management plan with respect to ASHRAE 188P, serve on your HACCP team, help design targetted monitoring plans to achieve validation of controls while minimizing budget impact, and serve as your reference laboratory for Legionella analysis (member in good standing - CDC ELITE program for Legionella testing proficiency).
RESEARCH - ASI recently completed a Water Research Foundation (WRF), formerly American Water Works Association Research Foundation or AWWARF) grant (Significance of Current Methods and Monitoring Strategies for E. coli and Total Coliform Measurements, #4024). This study provided a comprehensive examination of all qualitative and quantitative methods for the detection of coliforms and E. coli in drinking water, which are approved by USEPA and the United Kingdom (UK) Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI). This study includes 29 utilities in the U.S. and U.K. DR. Fricker served as the Prinicipal Investigator for this study and Mr. Warden served as Co-PI.
CRYPTOSPORIDIUM - ASI is nationally regarded as an expert laboratory regarding Cryptosporidium and Giardia. ASI was one of the first laboratories audited and approved by the USEPA under the LT2 Laboratory Quality Assurance Program for Cryptosporidium testing. We have provided LT2-compliant Cryptosporidium data since 2001. ASI is also accredited under the National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NELAP) by the Florida Dept. of Health to perform Method 1623 (Cryptosporidium and Giardia) as well as for analysis of Drinking Water and Non-Potable water for Total Coliforms and E. coli, by Colilert (SM 9223B). ASI is also certified by the Dept. of Health in Vermont, Connecticut, and New Mexico.
BIOSOLIDS - ASI provides biosolids pathogen testing services for compliance with 40 CFR Part 503 (land application of biosolids). We also provide alternative organism testing for process control and management, and perform biosolids research.
VIRUSES - In conjunction with its affiliate laboratory at UNH, ASI was approved throughout the EPA’s Information Collection Rule (ICR) for both protozoa and viruses. ASI participated in the validation of EPA Methods 1622 (Cryptosporidium) and EPA Method 1623 (Giardia and Cryptosporidium), and participated in the EPA’s ICR Supplemental Survey. ASI also helped validate EPA Method 1605 (Aeromonas) in anticipation of the Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR). More recently, ASI was selected to perform the single laboratory validation of EPA Method 1693 for Cryptosporidium and Giardia in disinfected wastewater effluent and combined sewer overflows (CSO's) and to participate in the subsequent multiple laboratory validation.
OTHER - ASI also serves related water, wastewater, biosolids, pharmaceutical and other industries. We detect, identify and / or enumerate algae, bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses in water, biosolids / wastewater and other environmental matrices, utilizing both traditional and molecular techniques. ASI was the first laboratory in the U.S. licensed by Applied Biosystems to utilize Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) to analyze commercial environmental samples. More recently, ASI has begun utilizing DNA extraction, amplification and genetic sequencing as a means to identify unknown microorganisms. ASI also provides materials science services using our Scanning Electron Microscope/Energy dispersive Spectrometer (SEM/EDS). In addition, ASI has successfully designed and executed hundreds of microbiological challenge studies for numerous industrial clients. These projects have involved a wide variety of types of treatment devices (water / wastewater / medical waste), microbial detection test kits, industrial / domestic use products, etc., using live protozoa, bacteria, fungi and/or viruses according to proprietary and standard protocols.
