The Australian Government established Australian Solar Institute Limited (ASI) in 2009 to keep the nation at the forefront of solar innovation.

We invest in research and development (R&D) projects that improve the efficiency and cost effectiveness of photovoltaic and concentrating solar power technologies.

We also invest in people - through student scholarships, fellowships, research exchanges and knowledge sharing activities - to build the local expertise needed to stay ahead.

Close to two-thirds of the $150 million provided by the Australian Government has been invested in people and projects that will advance solar innovation.

“Our focus for 2012 is to complete our initial investment portfolio and put in place a knowledge sharing platform that will be of benefit to researchers, investors, industry and governments for many years.” Executive Director, Mark Twidell.

Our website will help you find information on our projects, current funding opportunities and upcoming knowledge sharing events. Read more about us in our Annual Report and Strategic Plan.

Vision:

For Australian solar R&D to contribute significantly to widespread and sustainable deployment of solar energy applications.

Mission:

Proactively foster and support excellent R&D in Australia to accelerate commercial deployment of photovoltaic and concentrating solar power technologies, which will increase the competitiveness of solar energy.

Legislative Foundation:

The Australian Government established ASI as a Commonwealth Company in 2009 under the Commonwealth Authorities and Companies Act 1997.

Our Board of Directors reports to the Minister for Resources and Energy.

From 2013, we will form part of the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA). ARENA will provide long-term financial assistance for solar technology development along the full innovation spectrum. Find out more about the Government’s plan to increase the deployment of renewable energy under ARENA.
