This division has its origin in the operation of drilling rigs of BAUER Maschinen GmbH for the mining industry and has in the meantime become a comprehensive service provider for the exploration and mining clients. Today, it is concentrating on the exploration of: deposits, constructions in the field of traffic, disposals; on production drilling for water, oil, gas and geothermal energy; on special methods for mining mineral resources as well as on various exploration work for any kind of mining. This division developed in the 90s from first activities of BAUER Spezialtiefbau GmbH in the field of decontaminating polluted areas and opened out into the foundation of BAUER Umwelt GmbH (BMU). 1. Landfield Restoration

a) Characteristic Sites:

- Gaswerk remediation
Remediation of former Gasworks is a part of our daily business. Whether by soil replacement boring or conventional soil replacement techniques, far more than twenty sites have been successfully rehabilitated by BAUER Umwelt in the recent years.

- Industrial Sites
Remediation solutions for industrial sites have to be individually designed with respect to the remediation method as well as to the waste disposal concept. With our wide range of available technologies, we have an ideal solution for every challenge.

- Military Sites
Military sites are often characterized by diverse range of pollutants. The spectrum of toxic substances ranges from total petroleum hydrocarbons and BTEX from fuel depots to heavy metals from ammunition, unexploded ordinances and ammunition itself. An individually designed approach and thorough execution is essential for sites of this kind.

b) Site containment
Since a complete removal of old landfill sites is not always desirable due to safety concerns as well as the costs securing of individual sites , is becoming more and more popular. Measures to secure residual contamination can present an economic and at times the only possible - and cost-efficient alternative to the remediation procedure. A high technical standard plays an important role for the sustainability of the measure taken.

An overview of the most important methods which have been utilised by BMU:

Encapsulation vertical/horizontal:

a) vertical e.g. VIB wall, sheet pile wall, diaphragm cut-off wall, Mixed-in-Place (MIP)-Wand, bored pile wall, CSM-wall

b) horizontal e.g. high pressure/low pressure injection, Tube-à-Manchette-injection
Immobilisation of the toxic substances: e.g. Mixed-in-Place (MIP)-Elements, Cutter-Soil-Mixing (CSM)-Elements, High pressure/low-pressure injection body, etc.



c) Special Foundation Technologies

- Replacement boring

If conventional excavation is not possible, e.g. when emissions are to be minimized, the contamination source is at greater depths or close to adjoining buildings which face the risk of settlement, the boring method is used.

Overlapping soil replacement borings with rotary drilling rigs can currently be performed with a diameter of up to 2.3 m. After drilling out the contaminated soil, the drill spoil is disposed of and the drill hole is refilled.

Advantages:

  • Execution is possible in confined spaces and/or in close proximity to adjoining buildings
  • Low release of pollutants (=> gases / odours) during extraction of soil
  • Very low accumulation of contaminated groundwater by a depth-driven groundwater extraction
  • three-dimensional evaluation of the remediation success is possible


- Honeycomb exacavation

Honeycomb excavation presents yet another alternative to the conventional excavation.

Unless there are structural reasons not to apply the method, its main advantage, compared to the soil replacement boring method, is a nearly 100% soil replacement without overlapping of the individual combs. An increase in disposal quantities is prevented by this method.

- Mixed-in-Place / Cutter Soil Mixing

The term mixed-in-place (MIP) describes the process of mixing the existing soil and a binder suspension in-situ. Sealing elements such as cut-off walls can be produced this way. The method can also be used to immobilise contaminants in-situ – thus avoiding the necessity of excavation of the contaminated material.

The Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM - method) uses a modified milling technology in order to in-situ mix binder suspension with natural soil.


d) On-Site
Contrary to off-site treatment, on-site or in-situ measures require only local or no transportation of contaminated material. Logistics and costs are reduced. Furthermore, the cleaned material can be re-used for backfilling on-site - no disposal costs are incurred and no unpolluted material for backfilling needs to be imported. Biological on-site treatment involves stimulation of biodegradation of pollutants in biopiles or bioreactors through aeration and addition of nutrients. BAUER Umwelt owns special equipment for on-site remediation.


2. remediation technology

A variety of contaminants in groundwater as well as untreated waste water from mine drainage and construction activities demand a technically adapted and economical purification method.

BAUER Umwelt offers compact rental systems and builds project-specific treatment plants to meet your individual requirements. Detailed planning of all components, assembly, maintenance and operation along with supervision are part of the BAUER services. For temporary purification of groundwater and untreated waste water contaminated with TPH's, BTEX, PAH's and CVOC's, heavy metals and other contaminants, we utilise methods, such as precipitation and flocculation, filtration, adsorption, desorption, ion exchange and membrane technology from our comprehensive equipment rental pool. A special focal point is the use of biological and natural purification methods, e.g. constructed or treatment wetlands to achieve a reduction of the environmental and carbon dioxide footprint. Research co-operations with universities and scientific institutions enable us to develop innovative methods for the benefit of our clients.


- Plant Operation and Maintenance

BAUER Environment Group treatment plants and our staff operate Europe-wide. Process visualisation and alarm systems help us to plan maintenance works efficiently. In addition we achieve a high plant availability.

Experienced service technicians are on site with completely equipped service vehicles in case of malfunction.


- Soil Vapour Extraction / Air Sparging


For the remediation of unsaturated soil, soil vapour extraction, sometimes in combination with air sparging and bio-venting is used. For treatment of the exhaust-air, we use activated carbon filter, catalytic oxidation and bio filters of our own production. Soil Vapour Extraction (SVE) technique is particularly suitable for the remediation of contamination involving volatile substances. BAUER Umwelt offers its clients appropriate plants and aggregates for this purpose.


- In Situ
In-situ techniques are used alone or in addition to pump-and-treat and soil-vapour methods in order to sustainably reduce the remediation time. With thermal techniques, such as thermo-stripping, steam injection and hot-water-flushing long lasting remediation success was achieved in several projects within a few weeks and months. The in-situ techniques are used when:

• continued use of a property is required even during the remediation process • due to the local conditions, excavation of the material is technically impossible or extremely difficult • the solution presents a cost-efficient alternative to conventional methods.

BAUER Umwelt offers its clients state-of-the-art technology. We utilise catalytic oxidation units, solvent recovery plants or air-activated carbon for purification of exhaust air.

a) Chemical methods

By using Chemical methods the toxic substances are destroyed or converted into harmless compounds.In-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO)

Various oxidising agents have the ability to react with contaminants (e.g. VOC's) and destroy them. Ozone (O3), Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), Potassium-/Sodium - Permanganate (K/Na MnO4), Persulphate (S2O8) and Calcium-/ Magnesium - Peroxide (Ca/MgO2) belong to this group. Oxidising agents are injected into the soil by an injection technique which enables a targeted and even distribution in the soil.

Use of nano-iron

Nano-iron is composed of particles of elementary iron with a diameter of approx. 70 nm. Due to its high specific surface (30 m²/g), nano-iron reacts very quickly and effectively with VOC's.

b) Biological methods

Biological methods are based on the ability of microorganisms to convert contaminants into harmless substances like CO2 and Water. In addition to direct biological degradation, there are co-metabolisms, where the toxic substances can be removed using other metabolic pathways. Biological methods are characterised by a particularly high environmental compatibility and cost effectiveness. On the other hand, they are relatively slow.

Aerobic methods

Characteristics of aerobic methods are that the biological activity is dependent on the presence of oxygen, i.e., sufficient oxygen supply is necessary for the process. Groups of toxic substances which degrade well under aerobic conditions are: TPH's, aromatic hydrocarbons/PAH, phenols and certain VOCs (Cis-DCE, VC).

Anaerobic methods

Anaerobic biological processes take place in the absence of oxygen. Anaerobic conditions are created by adding carbon sources such as molasses, lactate and ethanol. Anaerobic methods are primarily used for degradation of CVOC's.

 

c) Physical method
Thermo-Stripping

This method is a variation of the soil vapour extraction method. The soil is heated with special probes first, this increases the volatility of the substances and a higher removal efficiency is achieved in a shorter space of time. Steam-air injection is a variation of this method.

d) Immobilisation method

Immobilisation Methods do not eliminate the toxic substances , the substances e fixed in the soil matrix instead. The soil is converted into a rock-like body and the substances lose their mobility and thus pose no threat to the groundwater anymore.

Mechanical mixing techniques

Most of the soil mixing techniques are on-site techniques whose goal is conditioning. For the in-situ treatment, BAUER Umwelt has developed several techniques for sludge and soil, in which additives are mixed to the soil matrix with an auger mixing tool, resulting in the toxic substances being completely immobilised with additives/fines.

The term “mixed-in-place” describes the process of mixing soil with binding agents in-situ with a triple auger system rotating in opposite directions. By this process, patented by Bauer Spezialtiefbau, the existing pores in the soil structure are filled, resulting in a solidified soil due to the geometry of the triple auger.

The Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM method) consists of an in-situ mixing self-curing suspension with natural soil by a modified milling technique.

Use of injection techniques

Various injection methods used in specialist foundation e can present the only possibility to secure a site like, e.g. Hot Spots underneath buildings. Low and high pressure injection can be used in aeras with low ceiling height. While low-pressure methods use 1-20 bar pressure, high pressure injections use approximately 500 bar.

e) In Situ Remediation Technology
In-situ techniques are used alone or in addition to pump-and-treat and soil-vapour methods in order to sustainably reduce the remediation time. f) Funnel-and-Gate Systems
For Funnel-and-Gate systems, funnel-shaped cut-off walls (so called funnels) are constructed, directing the contaminated groundwater to a gate. The groundwater is then treated by e.g. activated carbon or bio reactors. The water flows through the gate in natural gradients, i.e. passively, without pumping. After purification, the water is then released back into the downstream groundwater aquifer after the gate.

 

Constructed wetlands

Waste water, sewage and sediment sludges from municipal utilities and industrial and commercial uses requires treatment which can be effected by biological means.

Our natural constructed wetland processes offer an assured biological method of treating waste water and sewage at distributed installations. The success of this low-maintenance, stable ecological process is based on the harmonious interaction between the plants, the filter gravel and micro-organisms.

The energy efficiency and CO2 binding capability of these plants underscore their eco-friendly credentials.

Plants can be custom-configured in line with the volumes being processed. Single- or multi-stage systems are employed.

 

3. brownfield remediation

BAUER Umwelt undertakes landfill construction projects. These include, for instance, waste relocation, construction and operation of systems for collection of gases and leachate including leachate treatment plants, or installation of underground and surface sealing layers as well as encapsulation.

Securing and re-cultivation of old landfills also belongs to our range of services.

- Construction of new landfills
BAUER Umwelt develops landfill concepts and constructs them according to the appropriate technical standards. Besides manufacturing the underground sealing in accordance with the site-specific requirements and installing the landfill infrastructure appropriate for its use, we also carry out everything from backfilling to the landfill closure within Build-Operate-Transfer models.

- Landfill relocation
BAUER Umwelt performs relocations of old landfills in a qualified and professional manner. For this purpose, BAUER Umwelt develops site and material specific logistics concepts in accordance with all standards of the emission control and occupational health and safety and implements them. The range of services extends up to relocation of hazardous substance landfills of all categories.

 

- Landfill securing
BAUER Umwelt secures old landfills and implements landfill closure concepts. The range of services extends from cut-off walls barriers and subsequent construction of sealing layers up to the recultivation of the landfill’s surface.



- Leachate remediation
BAUER Umwelt designs, builds and operates leachate treatment plants. The range of services also includes construction and installation of systems for collection of leachate, thus providing complex services from just one source.

 

4. dismantling
Removal and disassembly of industrial and commercial facilities demands high standards of the contracted company, due to the variety of individual measures that have to be implemented while complying with high quality and safety-related regulations. BAUER Umwelt meets these demands on the highest level with its own equipment, experienced and trained employees, thorough planning and implementation of the required occupational health and safety and environment protection measures. - industrial sites

We are specialised in the disassembly and demolition of industrial sites using recycling concepts, often combined with decontamination of building parts and equipment, and subsequent remediation of the subsoil. The scope of work includes e.g. dismantling of chimneys with explosives, targeted removal of asbestos contamination or building components contaminated by heavy metals and PAH.

Remediation methods for industrial sites must always be individually designed in terms of remediation technique and disposal concept.

Generally, rehabilitation concepts for industrial sites have to be customised in terms of the remediation technique as well as the disposal concept. The great variety of our services enables us to find an optimised solution to any problem.

We dismantle steel structures - such as the Schnettker motorway bridge near Dortmund - or tanks and pipelines.

- nuclear sites
As a consequence of German nuclear energy phase-out, nuclear sites present a new challenge for environmental technology. BAUER Umwelt, in close cooperation with its clients, has gained valuable experience in disassembly and remediation of former nuclear sites through several projects.

BAUER Umwelt has a quality assurance system of the Nuclear Safety Standards Commission (KTA) in accordance with KTA 1401 and has in the recent years already successfully performed disassembly, subsoil and water remediation projects at nuclear plants using specially adapted techniques.

 

- asbestos contaminated structures

For decades, asbestos was used for heat and sound insulation in buildings and in industrial plant construction. Demolition of buildings and/or substances contaminated with asbestos are dangerous tasks, which can affect the employees and their immediate surroundings.

Asbestos removal measures and the remediation of contaminated structures are therefore carried out only by our appropriately trained and qualified personnel.

- Soil treatment center

BAUER Umwelt owns and operates four soil and waste treatment plants for the treatment of contaminated soils and other materials with a total capacity of approx. 440,000 tons a year. Our plants are in Hirschfeld (Saxony), Bleicherode (Thuringia), Schrobenhausen (Bavaria) and Hamburg.
All of our facilities have the capability to biologically treat organically contaminated materials. The biological degradation of contaminants is accomplished by the individually determined addition of water, oxygen, nutrients, and/or microorganisms. Also the optimum temperatures for the activity of the microorganisms are provided. Thus, we ensure economical treatment and high-value reuse of the treated materials.

2) Process water

Water is an essential part of many different industrial manufacturing operations. In the production process water is often contaminated with a wide variety of pollutants, such as solids, dissolved heavy metals and organic compounds. In order to be discharged into the public sewer system for treatment at a sewage plant this waste water usually has to be pre-treated, or must undergo final treatment for direct discharge into an outfall.

As water resources are becoming ever more limited, the goal is to continually minimize water consumption or even to eliminate the need for it altogether. This is accomplished on the basis of custom concepts, especially by integrating 'closed-circuit' techniques.

BAUER Water is able to call upon all the techniques essential to professional waste water treatment and recycling. The recovery of valuable raw materials from waste water can also represent an attractive solution for customers.

 
- Wetlands NNV

4) Produced Water
Waste water created by extraction operations in the oil and gas industry is known as 'produced water'. This water contains impurities which occur in oil and gas reservoirs, such as hydrocarbons, mineral substances and in some cases heavy metals.
As a partner to the oil and gas industry, BAUER Water offers a wide variety of solutions for the treatment of produced water, including a service package within the framework of operator models.

 
The goal is to recover the residual oil left in the produced water. In what is a unique project of its kind to date, in Nimr, Oman, BAUER Water has built and supplied a large-scale reed-bed treatment plant covering an area of 1.8 by 3.3 kilometres. The plant not only recovers oil from the waste water by means of an oil separator system, it also obtains salt by leaching the purified water in the final stage. The reeds, which are harvested twice a year, can be used as biomass to produce gas or electricity. This means the entire installation represents an exemplary ecological-biological process. BAUER Water has also been contracted to operate the plant for the next 20 years.
 
5) Decontamination

Decontamination of polluted water by naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) is an integral part of the BAUER Water portfolio, as is the deactivation of waste water in the pharmaceutical industry and the sterilization of waste water from research institutes, hospitals, etc.

BAUER Water additionally offers its customers tailored special plants for exhaust air treatment and gas scrubbing. In this we apply the techniques of wet-washing and catalytic oxidation.
