The BoxBarrier development started in 2007, when Waterboard Delfland in The Netherlands started a design competition for a temporary flood defence system for the Woudse Polder. Waterboard Delfland was looking for innovative barriers which could withstand a flood level of 0.45 m above dike crest level. The barriers were to be placed on top of a clay covered dike. It was specified that the barriers should have a minimal effect on the dike itself. Several tests have been carried out with BoxBarrier prototypes over the past years, also in cooperation with Waterboard Rijnland. After four years of development, the BoxBarrier has been launched in 2011 by BAM Infraconsult / GMB.
