Delivering Environmental Performance

Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA) is an alliance of oil sands producers focused on accelerating the pace of improvement in environmental performance in Canada's oil sands through collaborative action and innovation.

Through COSIA, participating companies capture, develop and share the most innovative approaches and best thinking to improve environmental performance in the oil sands, focusing on four Environmental Priority Areas (EPAs) – tailings, water, land and greenhouse gases.

To date, COSIA member companies have shared 560 distinct technologies and innovations that cost over $900 million to develop. These numbers are increasing as the alliance matures and expands. Through this sharing of innovation and application of new technologies, members can accelerate the pace of environmental performance improvements.

COSIA takes innovation and environmental performance in the oil sands to the next level through a continued focus on collaboration and transparent exchange.

Our Vision: To enable responsible and sustainable growth of Canada’s oil sands while delivering accelerated improvement in environmental performance through collaborative action and innovation.

Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA) is an alliance of oil sands producers focused on accelerating the pace of improvement in environmental performance in Canada’s oil sands through collaborative action and innovation.

The alliance was launched March 1, 2012 when representatives of 12 companies came together in Calgary to sign the COSIA charter, signifying their agreement with COSIA’s vision, their support of our alliance’s beliefs, and their pledge to uphold the commitments put forward in the charter. Two additional companies have since joined COSIA.

We bring together leading thinkers from industry, government, academia and the wider public to improve measurement, accountability and environmental performance in the oil sands in four priority areas. These four Environmental Priority Areas (EPAs) are tailings, water, land and greenhouse gases.

We take innovation and environmental performance in the oil sands to the next level.

We accomplish this through a continued focus on collaboration and transparent exchange, by setting environmental performance goals and reporting publicly on progress towards these goals. Progress towards these goals will be achieved by breaking down barriers to innovation, and by identifying, developing and applying solutions-oriented innovation to the most pressing oil sands environmental challenges.

To date, COSIA member companies have shared 560 distinct technologies and innovations that cost over $900 million to develop. These numbers are increasing as the alliance matures and expands. Through this sharing of innovation and application of new technologies, members can accelerate the pace of environmental performance improvements.

On March 1, 2012, representatives of 12 oil sands producers came together in Calgary to sign the COSIA charter and become founding shareholders in the alliance.

Charter for Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance

We, as developers of Canada’s oil sands and signatory companies to this Charter, hereby create Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA).

Our Vision

Our Vision is to enable responsible and sustainable growth of Canada’s Oil Sands while delivering accelerated improvement in environmental performance through collaborative action and innovation.

Our Shared Beliefs

We believe that:

  • Canada’s Oil Sands are a vital resource for providing energy security for the future of Canadians and the world.
  • Oil Sands development provides financial and social well-being through job creation, business opportunities, and economic activity.
  • Our industry has environmental impacts, which we will work to minimize. Action will reflect a strong commitment to innovation and collaboration and be focused on key environmental priorities so that together we will deliver accelerated improvement in our environmental performance.
  • COSIA will result in faster and more effective research and development and environmental innovation through the use of complementary technologies and resources.

Our Commitments

Our companies pledge to:

  • Collaborate and innovate to accelerate improvement in environmental performance through the formation of COSIA.
  • Provide visible leadership and accountability both within our individual companies and within our broader alliance.
  • Drive to accelerate improvement in environmental performance as measured from a baseline in the priority areas of Tailings, Water, Land, and Greenhouse Gas Emissions.
  • Collaborate with governments and other stakeholders to execute a world-class regional environmental monitoring program.
  • Accelerate the pace and scope of environmental innovation, working with a broad range of participants within and outside of Canada.
  • Allocate multi-year human and financial resources, and initiate, participate in, or lead projects within COSIA’s mandate, thereby contributing equitably to achieve our goals.
  • Listen, respond to, and work with stakeholders who aspire to our vision, and address evolving regional needs and conditions.
  • Assess and drive progress, remove barriers, and communicate the performance of COSIA in a transparent fashion.

While we remain competitors in all respects, we recognize that together we can deliver accelerated improvement in our environmental performance. We stand together to find solutions to the environmental challenges of oil sands development through innovation and collaborative action.

COSIA’s mandate is based on performance. Our focus is on developing performance initiatives that are rooted in progress in four key Environmental Priority Areas (EPAs): tailings, water, land and greenhouse gases. Oil sands producers, through earlier organizations, have already been working together to improve environmental performance in these environmental areas.
