The original engineering practice from which the Cardno group evolved commenced operations in Brisbane, Queensland in 1945 as Cardno & Davies.
Gerry Cardno and Harold Davies met while employed by the United States Army Australian Base Command. Davies was a visionary engineer who was part of the team that created one of the most internationally recognisable Australian structures, the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Following the end of World War II, the two men combined their engineering expertise to establish Brisbane-based consultancy Cardno & Davies.
During the post-war boom years through to the 1970s, Cardno & Davies was a driving force in the development of Queensland. The company designed and supervised water supplies, bridges, dams and roads throughout the state, as well as sewerage systems in Brisbane and regional towns.
In what was a pivotal move for the Company, in 1999 Cardno & Davies merged with McMillan, Britton & Kell, a consulting engineering practice based in New South Wales with origins dating back to 1936. At this time the Company was known as Cardno MBK.
Following the 1999 merger, Cardno grew from strength to strength through mergers with local and international firms and the organic growth of its existing operations. Cardno’s service areas steadily grew to encompass a broad range of planning, surveying, engineering and environmental services, as well as project management of development assistance programs internationally.
In 2004, Cardno Limited listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX:CDD) to position the Company for further growth.
Shaping the future
From early beginnings as a Brisbane-based engineering firm, Cardno is now a global company on a mission to shape the future for communities around the world.
Cardno’s continuing success is largely attributable to the provision of diverse and complementary services, a strong emphasis on exceptional client service and a growth strategy which positions the Company to make the most of strategic markets that deliver new services and accelerate organic growth.
The Cardno group has continued to strategically merge with businesses to augment and enhance the Company's capabilities. This expansion has been supported by internal growth of existing services throughout its operations.
Cardno has a strong regional focus which complements specialist teams in major cities. About 8,200 staff now work in 300 offices on projects in over 100 countries throughout the world.
Cardno was recently ranked at #27 on the Engineering News Record's Top 500 Design Firms list; and Leading US industry publication ZweigWhite recently awarded Cardno the top spot on the 2013 Hot Firms List , recognising Cardno as the fastest growing engineering and environmental services firm in North America, for the third year running.
Cardno was recently honoured to win its second consecutive Australian Export Award; the 2014 Business Services award. In 2013 we were the recipient of the national award for Infrastructure and Construction.
