Carillion is one of the UK's leading support services companies with a substantial portfolio of Public Private Partnership projects and extensive construction capabilities.

The Group has annual revenue of around £5 billion, employs around 45,000 people and operates across the UK, the Middle East and Canada.

The Group has four business segments:

  • Support services - this includes facilities management, facilities services, energy services, rail services, road maintenance, utility services and consultancy businesses.
  • Public Private Partnership (PPP) projects - this includes our investing activities in PPP projects in our chosen sectors of defence, health, education, transport, secure, energy services and other Government accommodation.
  • Middle East construction services - this includes our building and civil engineering activities in the Middle East.
  • Construction services (excluding the Middle East) - this includes our building, civil engineering and developments activities in the UK and our construction activities in Canada.

The name 'Carillion' was deliberately chosen in 1999 as a neutral name for a collection of companies, each with a strong heritage.

The history of Carillion traces to the companies that had become part of the Tarmac Group by the late 1990s: Tarmac Construction, Wimpey Construction, Cubitts and Mitchell Construction.

In 1999 the Tarmac Group demerged into a building materials company ('Tarmac') and a company focused on support services and construction services ('Carillion').

After 1999 Carillion has gone on to acquire further well-known companies: Mowlem (acquired in 2006), Alfred McAlpine (acquired in 2008), Vanbots (acquired in 2008) and Eaga (acquired in 2011).

With increased size, Carillion has further developed our outsourcing expertise in facilities management, energy services, and infrastructure services. These, together with our construction services, ensure that we can provide fully integrated support services for buildings and infrastructure.
