In the MEL process, lime reagent, containing calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) and magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2), is used to react with the SO2. As with the LSFO process, the hydroxide slurry is added to the recycle tank to replenish reagent consumed under pH control of 6 to 7.
Spray Dryer Absorption (SDA) is a dry scrubbing process that is generally used for low-sulfur coal. SDA FGD systems are typically located after the air preheaters, and the waste products are collected either in a baghouse or electrostatic precipitator. However, to achieve sulfur dioxide (SO2) reduction above 80% with good reagent use, the dry scrubber is generally followed by a baghouse.
For many utilities and industrial applications, dry sorbent injection (DSI) of hydrated lime offers impressive advantages over the wet or semi-wet flue gas desulfurization systems for controlling the emissions of SO2, HCl, HF, SO3 and even Hg. These potential advantages include ease of retrofit, dry waste and low capital investment.
