climate change equity
climate change equity is an agent of change, actively incubating and demonstrating the solutions for a lower carbon intensive economy. We aim to have projects that provide insight and guidance to individuals and organisations of all types as to how we can improve our resource efficiency.
We aim to empower those that care about climate change but struggle to reduce the carbon and resource intensity of their everyday lives.
We do this by breaking the chicken and egg paralysis around many initiatives; and in doing so help to unlock pathways to a prosperous and equitable resource efficient future.
Our role is to take the risks that prevent other organisations from acting. We explore solutions that are available today but not yet widely adopted and in doing so provide more resource efficient choices.
Addressing climate change is a fundamental and unprecedented shift in our economy. This results in a lack of understanding and fear which are significant barriers to change. We provide formal and informal courses and frameworks that help to overcome these barriers.
In order to inform and direct our efforts we work to learn more about what a prosperous low carbon future will look like; what the institutional and cultural barriers to this future are; and what options we have for addressing these barriers.
climate change equity is a new type of organisation. Our vision is to be a leader in the response to climate change.
Established in 2009, we are Australia’s first charity focused on climate change. Our charitable status reduces the materiality of the risks that hinder traditional organisations in responding to climate change. As a not-for-profit public company, we are answerable to our members for our progress against our mission. As a business, we are answerable to our sponsors for delivering our stated goals with integrity and transparency, and we are answerable to our employees and volunteers to provide participatory leadership.
In order to decouple the link between carbon emissions and economic prosperity, there is a need for a significant shift in our approach to everyday activity. Making this shift involves leaps of faith into the unknown that require both leadership and early adoption. climate change equity has been formed to lead, and seeks support and early adoption from our growing list of partners, supporters and members.
Quote: ‘No one knows the pathway to our future – it will be at the end of many experiments’
Our vision is to provide everyday alternatives to individuals and organisations that are sustainable and resilient.
Our lives today are generally resource inefficient. We use drinking water to wash our cars and flush our toilets; we compromise our clean air through electricity production and personal transport; we spend our time caught up in avoidable congestion and waste energy using inefficient and non-integrated systems.
The clearest signal that our model for prosperity is facing a disruptive discontinuity is our impact on the earth’s climate. The scale of our impact as increasingly prolific resource consumers now jeopardises the planetary support systems and natural capital upon which we all rely. The youngest members of our community face a future we will not recognise – our choice is whether this future is one we would wish upon them or not.
The future we wish for is dependent on finding more resource efficient alternatives that aren’t currently available. Our vision is to be a guide towards this future, and where these alternatives are missing, help to provide them.
Climate change equity aims to find the pathways that enable everyone to participate in the journey to a sustainable and equitable future. We aim to discover and implement the products and services that inform and deliver real practical and accessible alternatives in order to improve our resource efficiency.
We see ourselves as a link between organisations that focus on research and strategic thinking around the effects of and solutions to climate change, and those people and organisations that care about the effects of climate change, but do not yet feel empowered to act. In doing so we provide tangible actions that serve as a guide to improve our quality of life, while increasing our resource efficiency.
