Coordinating Committee on Hydrometeorology and Pollution Monitoring of the Caspian Sea (CASPCOM). It is planning to devote this page to historical facts regarded both to CASPCOM and to hydrometeorological observations and oceanographic research of the Caspian Sea. The Caspian Sea is the largest internal water body on the Planet. Its ecosystem depends on climate change strongly, and meteorological conditions in the region significantly affect human activities in the open sea and coastal areas. The Caspian ecosystem is subjected to those activities, in its turn. As a result, hydrometeorologic and pollution monitoring in the Caspian region is of a great importance for economies of the Caspian littoral states, as well as for the conservation of the Sea unique ecosystem, which is the main heritage of the present and next generations of the Caspian peoples.
