The basic definition of Chemical Engineering as a scientific discipline, i.e. the transfer of chemical technology from the laboratory bench to industrial scale with a major emphasis on process performance, is nowadays subject to major strategic changes. Among these there is increasing interest in the development of new end products, especially in the area of Material Science and Biomedicine. To this end the generally interdisciplinary character of Chemical Engineering has to be complemented by synergies and collaboration with various biological and biotechnological disciplines.
