Fluid Equipment Development Company (FEDCO) was founded in 1997 to develop new fluid machinery to reduce the cost of reverse osmosis desalination. Fluid Equipment Development Company (FEDCO) was founded in 1997 to develop new fluid machinery to reduce the cost of reverse osmosis desalination. With Osmonics and General Electric as our partners, we developed procedures required for quality and accountability, while still retaining the innovative spirit of a entrepreneurial company. FEDCO became fully independent in 2006 and continues to lead the industry in developing pump and ERD technology uniquely optimized for SWRO and BWRO desalination.
About Our Founder...
Dedicated to energy recovery without compromise:
In the early 1980s, Eli Oklejas was chief R&D hydraulic designer and head of the R&D lab at Union Pump Company. He was assigned the task of testing a piston-type RO energy recovery device. After dealing with several failures and becoming frustrated with the overall system complexity, he proposed development of a turbocharger device that boosts the feed pressure booster by using brine hydraulic energy.
Eli left Union Pump to co-found Pump Engineering, Inc. where he served as president and led the effort to develop turbochargers for RO applications until his departure in 1996. He founded Fluid Equipment Development Company in 1997 to develop enhanced turbocharger units and high-pressure SWRO pumps. This effort culminated with the introduction of the Hydraulic Pressure Booster (HPB) and the MSS series of high-pressure feed pumps. Eli continues to serve as president of FEDCO, and currently works with a highly creative team of engineers and manufacturing specialists to continue development of new technologies.

In addition to FEDCO proprietary processes, a wide variety of commercially available software packages are used for product development:
- Finite Element Analysis: Used to determine stress and deformation in various components.
- Casting Solidification Analysis: Used to determine stress and deformation in various components.
- CAD/CAM: Used for specialized machining operations.
FEDCO has implemented a Quality Management System (QMS) per ISO 9001:2007. The QMS system is integrated into FEDCO’s information systems, resulting in near-paperless implementation, reduction of overhead costs, and improvement of document accuracy and accessibility.
Quality AssuranceEach part manufactured by FEDCO is checked for dimensional accuracy, and all third-party components are checked for specification compliance. Each FEDCO pump or HPB booster is hydrostatic-tested to verify integrity of pressure containment components. Testing complies with the Hydraulic Institute's standards.
Each unit is performance-tested for flow, pressure differential, and absorbed power at the duty point to verify that the design performance has been obtained. Tests conform to applicable Hydraulic Institute and ASME test codes for centrifugal pump testing.
All test data is measured and electronically stored with a computer data acquisition system. FEDCO has developed in-house testing software with complete data acquisition for each test loop within 100hp - 900hp capacities, so all performance data on each and every test is recorded and evaluated. A 3,000 hp variable speed test loop is currently under construction.
Efficiency and Reliability
Maximum equipment efficiency and reliability requires customized hydraulic designs. Our designs bring the best efficiency point of our products in harmony with the customer's duty point. When our proprietary software packages are integrated with computer numerical control (CNC) machines, we achieve delivery times faster than other manufacturers who deliver off-the-shelf units.
The process begins with the conversion of customer flow and pressure data into customized flow geometry, which is used to generate CNC machining programs. These programs are downloaded to the production machines.
The whole process is fully automatic and essentially paperless. Potential for human error is virtually eliminated. The combination of exceptionally high efficiencies with the fastest delivery in the industry provides FEDCO customers a unique opportunity to improve their competitive position.
Quality and accuracy are assured throughout the manufacturing process through the use of calibrated instruments and gauging fixtures. QC data is periodically reviewed and improvements are made throughout the manufacturing process. CNC machines are networked, all files have backups, and all production programs are documented.
