About Us
Two decades ago, environmental regulations were growing in number and complexity. Many businesses were having difficulty keeping pace with the implications. Out of this problem, a consulting company was born.
Today, GEL Engineering, LLC's services have expanded to include environmental consulting, civil engineering, and land and topographic surveying. We have three offices in the Carolinas (Charleston, SC; Greenville, SC; and Research Triangle Park, NC) staffed with some of the most highly respected and experienced leaders in their fields. Yet throughout our history, our client-centered approach remains the foundation of our business.
We're not a large, nationwide conglomerate. We don't want to be. We are a privately-held, woman-owned business that focuses on what we do best: solving clients' problems one at a time with innovation, science, and skill. The result is that our clients – many of whom have been working with us for two decades – know they can be certain of a successful outcome that is precisely appropriate for their situation. And, when business decisions and significant costs are at stake, certainty is what our clients value the most.
The GEL Story
Since 1981, the men and women of The GEL Group, Inc. (GEL) have been committed to providing technically accurate, cost effective, and timely solutions to our clients' problems. These problems are diverse and challenging, requiring a unique combination of state-of-the-art facilities, instrumentation, equipment and systems.
It is our people that make the difference. Whether it is the analysis of a simple water sample or the remediation and reclamation of a Brownfields site, our people are dedicated to bringing the necessary resources together to provide the best possible solution to the challenge.
But this dedication does not stop as we leave our front door. That is why our men and women spend time building homes for Habitat for Humanity, providing Christmas gifts to children who otherwise would not receive any, and supporting the United Way, in deed as well as financially. That is why sixteen of our employees spent their Thanksgiving of 1998 in Honduras, providing the means to supply clean drinking water to six communities in the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch. This effort led to the formation of a Christian non-profit organization dedicated to providing clean drinking water to millions of people worldwide. These are but a few examples of their dedication. It is this dedication, this commitment to excellence that is brought to bear on every challenge presented to us that sets The GEL Group apart.

History
The GEL Group, Inc, was founded in 1981 by George and Molly Greene. With just a handful of employees, George and Molly immediately began to grow the business the only way they knew, by providing accurate, cost effective, on-time solutions to their clients' problems. In the mid 1980s environmental consulting and field services were added to analytical services as the company continued to meet the needs of their clients.
After several expansions, the company outgrew its facilities and moved to its current location in 1988. Growth continued at a strong pace, fueled by work for the Departments of Energy and Defense. In the early 1990s, the company developed radiochemistry capabilities, followed quickly by radiobioassay. The environmental consulting group grew as well, with the addition of stack sampling and industrial hygiene and geophysical services. These additional services provided clients with a single site solution to their varied environmental needs. The 1990s brought about the development of traditional civil engineering as well as geophysical services. In 2001, George and Molly Greene decided to concentrate their efforts on creating a Christian non-profit organization, Water Missions International, dedicated to providing clean drinking water to people in developing countries and those affected by natural disasters.
In March, 2001, The GEL Group, Inc. was sold to its current owners, who have been active in the business for many years. With a committed staff at all levels, they continue to lead the growth of the company by providing accurate, cost effective, on-time solutions to their clients' problems.
