Gendore was started in 1948 as an Agricultural Machinery dealership by two men who formed a partnership during WWII. The men were Lew Genoni and Greg Dore. Lew was an Agricultural Contractor cutting chaff, clearing and ploughing fields and baling hay, with a self propelled baler that he designed and built from a stationary Cliff and Bunting press and an old International truck; possibly the worlds first self propelled baler. Lew also had the districts Golden Fleece petroleum distribution. Greg was a farmer from Nar Nar Goon who had purchased a used New Hollandmodel 76 square baler, which he was unable to get to operate properly. Some farmers from the district told Greg to contact Lew Genoni as he had plenty of knotter knowledge from his work with binders. Lew solved all Greg’s baler problems and a lifelong friendship started. Both men had the desire to own one of the new New Holland model 76 tractor drawn square balers but because of the War, supply was very short, and Lew thought that Greg being a farmer had a far better chance of being able to source a baler than he did during that time. After several attempts they were rewarded with the supply of a baler and immediately got it assembled and ready for work. The business grew and Lew and Greg ended up with a fleet of balers and were contracting all through Southern Victoria, their knowledge of the balers was staggering and all self taught. Demand for these balers was high during those years and the distributor for New Holland at the time Dorring Implements, needed service personal to help start and service balers in Queensland so they approached Lew and Greg and sent them to Queensland.
New Holland not long after this decided to take over the distribution of their products Australia wide and appointed Ernie Williams as their Managing Director, Ernie knew Lew and Greg well and approached them to start a business selling and servicing the product. They were very reluctant as they had never sold machinery before, but were persuaded to give it a go.
The partnership worked well for many years, but Greg needed to move back to the family farm, so he sold his share of the partnership in 1970 to Lew and his son Rex, who had been working in the business also.
The business started to grow rapidly and during the early 70′s when self propelled balers, bale wagons and speedrowers were popular, Gendore had the distinction of being the World’s largest New Holland dealer in Self Propelled Implements.
Also during this time the father and son combination of Lew and Rex had the incredible foresight to start importing Taarup disc mowers from Denmark. These mowers revolutionized grass mowing in Australia and started a great relationship with Taarup that is still going strong today.
Continuing the family tradition Gendore is now managed by Derek Genoni the third generation in the agricultural machinery business, and is a major New Holland dealership selling New Holland tractors and balers from the South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne, down the Mornington Peninsula and right through South Gippsland.
Since 1948 the company’s business philosophy has remained steady and strong, based on exceptional customer service and support, this remains today with all of Gendore’s 26 staff operating from the company’s two dealerships in Tooradin and Leongatha.
