Environmental Initiatives
Hyster seeks to minimize environmental impact
Hyster® operates under Hyster-Yale Group, Inc., whose parent company is Hyster-Yale Materials Handling, Inc., which recognizes environmental sustainability and the highest standards of health and safety in its products, workplace and community as fundamental to its worldwide business operations.
Within the material handling industry, there are numerous opportunities to positively impact the environment. The industry provides equipment enabling the optimum flow of goods that is essential to a vibrant economy. To the extent that this can be achieved while improving air quality, reducing energy consumption, reducing waste, increasing recycling, and increasing safety, Hyster contributes positively to environmental sustainability.
Specifically, Hyster is active in reducing energy consumption on its lift trucks and within its own facilities, including:
On the trucks
- Utilizing efficient AC motor and control technology, including motors that recover potential energy.
- Innovative engineering to reduce energy consumption, including weight reduction, drive train efficiency and hydraulic efficiency. Close collaboration with supply-chain partners to integrate engines which produce greatly reduced particulate emissions (soot) and volumes of carbon dioxide.
- Performance settings on multiple truck series enable users to prioritize fuel and energy economy over maximum productivity when this suits the operation.
- Producing lift trucks powered by cleaner-burning alternative fuels, including exploring the potential of hydrogen-powered fuel-cell trucks.
- Innovative transmission designs that reduce tire and brake wear in internal combustion engine (ICE) trucks.
- Electric lift trucks that recapture energy during braking and lowering of loads, allowing the energy to be reused.
In the facilities
- Have used low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) paints for over 10 years.
- Introduced powder coating as an alternative to traditional painting, with the intention of further reducing VOCs.
- Electrical and natural gas usage is monitored as part of an energy consumption management program.
- Using energy-efficient LED task and overhead lighting, with sensors to activate lighting only when required.
- Initiatives are underway to explore ways to re-use energy created during the manufacturing processes.
- In collaboration with a number of suppliers, reusable stillages have been introduced, which help reduce the amount of single-use packaging used in the manufacturing supply-chain process.
- Manufacturing facilities are ISO 14001 certified, denoting proper management of environmental goals.
