Achromatic doublet lenses consist of two optical components cemented together to form an achromatic doublet which is computer optimized to correct for on-axis spherical and chromatic aberrations. Our achromatic doublets are available with a single layer MgF2 coating or a broadband multi-layer coating for the visible spectrum. NIR achromatic doublets and edge blackened achromatic doublets are also available.

Achromatic doublet lenses are far superior to simple lenses for multi-color ('white light') imaging. The two elements composing an achromatic doublet lens (literally, 'a lens with no color') are paired together for their ability to correct the color separation inherent in glass. Having eliminated the problematic chromatic aberrations, achromatic doublet lenses become the most cost-efficient means for good polychromatic illumination and imaging.

Our new TECHSPEC® Near IR doublets are designed to provide the smallest spot size possible for polychromatic light between 750 and 1100nm. By utilizing our NIR doublets instead of standard doublets designed for the visible, RMS spot diameter can be reduced from 43μm to 22.5μm, for example, when using polychromatic light. Spot size will be smaller when focusing monochromatic sources. Near-IR doublets also reduce spherical aberration and have superior performance when used with a monochromatic source up to 2μm in wavelength. Typical applications for these doublets include: imaging lenses for the near infrared, focusing and expanding of NIR lasers, and focusing/collimating lenses for fiber optics and NIR LEDs.

Optimum Choice for Weight Sensitive IR Applications

Silicon aspheric lens is a high performance, lightweight solution suitable for MWIR applications, and is an ideal substitute for expensive ZnSe lens and fragile Germanium lens. Silicon aspheric lenses have excellent mechanical and thermal properties required to withstand adverse environmental effects, including temperature and pressure fluctuations. Because silicon is a low-density material, these lenses are also very suitable for various weight-sensitive systems, such as applications in many defense fields.

It is very suitable for infrared applications requiring strong optical windows.

 Ge window sheets are available in stock. Three kinds of antireflective coatings can be selected: antireflective coatings in 3-5 micron band are suitable for mid-infrared applications, antireflective coatings in 3-12 micron band are suitable for broadband multispectral applications, and antireflective coatings in 8-12 micron band are suitable for thermal imaging applications. Germanium optical materials are also suitable for antireflective coatings (AR) with design wavelengths of 8-12 microns. Germanium is seriously affected by temperature, and its transmittance decreases with the increase of temperature. Therefore, they can only be used below 100 C. The density of germanium (5.33 g/cm3) should be taken into account when designing a system with strict weight requirements. Germanium is mainly used in thermal imaging systems and forward-looking infrared (FLIR) fields. The Nusselt hardness of germanium is 780, about twice that of magnesium fluoride, which makes it more suitable for applications in the field of IR of variable optics.
