Italeco S.p.a. was founded in 1972 by the I.R.I. Group (a major Italian public holding) as the `ITALian company for the ECOlogy`, and was conceived as a centre of excellence for studies and applied research in the sectors of territorial planning, natural risk analysis and mitigation and remote sensing. Right after the beginning of its activity, Italeco understood the value of such integrated products made of cartography and associated data now named as Geographic Information Systems (G.I.S.): The first G.I.S. realized by Italeco (the S.IN.TE.S.I. project) was a G.I.S. based on aerial imagery and oriented to the landslide risk. The S.IN.TE.S.I. project dates back to 1977 and was one of the first modern G.I.Ss. ever realized.
