Keppel Seghers' history spans close to four decades. The company's foundations were laid on 11 September 1974, when Seghers Engineering NV was incorporated.1970s
In the 1970s, Seghers Engineering NV focused on wastewater treatment with aeration systems, the construction of waste combustion plants, as well as metal constructions, subcontracting and maintenance services.
The company developed the HARDpelletiser which turns sludge into a useful, environmentally-friendly product, the fluidised bed for cleaning of metal parts, and the ZEROFUEL fluidised bed technological solution, which is well-known as the best available technology for the combustion of sludge and other pasty wastes.
1980s and 1990s
The 1980s and 1990s marked Seghers Engineering NV's expansion in the Water, Solid Waste and Flue Gas Cleaning divisions, whereby Seghers Engineering Water NV and Seghers Engineering Solid+Air were founded to ensure the autonomous growth of the divisions.
During this period, the various branches of Seghers Engineering were rebranded under Seghers Better Technology Group, with a new global structure for synergy.
In addition, several new technologies were acquired by the Group, including the UNITANK® technology, a space and cost saving biological wastewater treatment solution, the ROTARY ATOMISER technology for flue gas cleaning, and the DANO® drum technology for recycling and pre-treatment of waste.
It was also during this period that the first sludge dryer/pelletiser for communal sludge in Bruges (Belgium) was commissioned.
Seghers Keppel Technology Group was incorporated in 2002, when Keppel Integrated Engineering (KIE) acquired the assets of Seghers Better Technology Group.
Subsequently, the Group was integrated in 2005 with the rest of the environmental companies belonging to KIE to strengthen cohesion among all environmental activities. The Group underwent a global name change to Keppel Seghers, its present name.
The early 2000s also saw the launch of several new water treatment technologies, including UNIBRANETM technology for the treatment of highly polluted industrial wastewater and leachate for safe discharge, UNITANK® 3rd generation which combines advanced purification with extreme compactness and highest operation flexibility, as well as NEWATER technology for water reuse applications.
During this period, Keppel Seghers also placed strategic focus on long-term participations, including Design, Build, Own & Operate (DBOO), Build, Operate & Transfer (BOT), Build, Own, Operate & Transfer (BOOT), Public Private Partnerships (PPPs), license agreements and joint ventures.

With the reorganisation of KIE and Keppel Energy in May 2013, Keppel Seghers also came under the wing of the then-incorporated company, Keppel Infrastructure.

Driving Environmental Technology Solutions
In September 2005, Keppel Seghers inaugurated its Environmental Technology Research Center in Belgium, comprising a modern laboratory and fully equipped hall for small-scale trials and pilot testing.
In March 2007, a second research centre was opened at the Keppel Seghers Ulu Pandan NEWater Plant in Singapore.
Furthering its commitment to innovation, parent company Keppel Integrated Engineering will be the first anchor tenant of the Tianjin Eco-City Sustainable Development Innovation Centre in the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City.
Keppel Environmental Technology Centre (KETC)
KETC underscores parent company Keppel Integrated Engineering's (KIE) dedication to long-term innovation in environmental solutions. KETC initiates, manages, and conducts R&D within KIE, and also collaborates with leading academic and research institutions worldwide.
Research partners include research institutes of Singapore's A*STAR, universities and polytechnics, UK's Cranfield University and Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research.
KETC works closely with Keppel Seghers Belgium on technologies in wastewater treatment and waste-to-energy systems that translate into innovative yet value-enhancing solutions. For Example, our Spacer and Turbo-Charger projects have resulted in significant cost savings for the Keppel Seghers Ulu Pandan NEWater Plant in Singapore.
In 2010, KETC was successful in a National Research Foundation call for Competitive Research Funding for a Co-Digestion project with one of our research partners. The same year, KETC achieved two US provisional patents (PCTs) on anaerobic wastewater treatment technology.
The patented improved digestor is envisaged to be highly efficient in producing green biogas, while achieving cost savings. It might also address the need for higher strength wastewater derived from both municipal and industrial sectors.
Currently, KETC is working on a number of projects, including the treatment of biosolids waste with energy recovery and seawater desalination.
