About Us
InnoEnergy is one of the three KICs (together with EIT ICT labs and Climate-KIC) created under the leadership of the EIT. We are a commercial company, incorporated as Societas Europea, with 29 shareholders, all of them key players in the energy field, with top rank industries, research centres and universities.
KIC InnoEnergy is profit oriented, but has a “not for dividend” financial strategy since we will reinvest our profits in our activities.
Strategy
KIC InnoEnergy's strategy is to be the leading engine for innovation and entrepreneurship in the field of sustainable energy. Sustainability by addressing:
- The reduction of the cost in the energy value chain (supply, transport, storage, distribution and retail)
- The increase of security (autonomy vis à vis the resource holders, intrinsic operational security)
- The reduction of CO2 and other green house gas emissions.
We focus on 6 thematic areas:
- Clean Coal Technologies
- European Smart Electric Grids & Electric Storage
- Intelligent, energy-efficient buildings and cities
- Energy from chemical fuels
- Renewables
- Sustainable Nuclear & Renewable Energy Convergence
Our activities and planned outputs
KIC InnoEnergy fosters the integration of education, research and business (the knowledge triangle), strengthening the culture of innovation and entrepreneurship.
The best way to define the activity of any company is by describing its outputs. KIC InnoEnergy delivers, among others, 3 distinctive outputs:
- MSc, PhDs and PostDoctorate engineers in the energy fields described above, with strong entrepreneurship and hands on capabilities
- Innovative technology for the energy processes, in the form of patents, new products and services.
- Start Ups/Spin offs or businesses growth in those fields of energy, upon the innovations developed internally or identified externally
With clear measurable planned outputs delivered by those activities in the first 5 years of the industrial plan, inter alia:
- 1200 students, PhD and midcareer professionals trained in InnoEnergy Education programs
- 55 new products or services for the sustainable energy value chain
- 37 patents registered (of which 10 transferred to SME)
- 20 spin-offs/start-ups
It is not by chance that we start the activities and outputs by education. We do believe talented people are at the heart of Innovation, besides technology. For KIC InnoEnergy, the talents that we help to create are the carriers of the technological innovation, and they derive business out of the technological innovation.
Legal Structure
KIC InnoEnergy is a commercial company, with 29 founding shareholders, incorporated as SE, with head quarters in The Netherlands.
KIC InnoEnergy activities in education, technology and innovation & entrepreneurship are designed, developed and implemented by a very reasonable balance of top rank industries, research centres, universities and business schools, the actors of the knowledge triangle, with the following split:
Those partners are regionally mapped in six collocation centres (CC) across Europe, and are either Formal, Associated or Network, depending on their contribution to the industrial plan, and resulting in different participation in the equity in the different legal structures (KIC or CC).
Our Uniqueness
Why is KIC InnoEnergy different from all existing institutions, consortiums, platforms, ...?
- Because we are a company, run as a company, with all its implications: built upon an industrial plan, results and output oriented, commitment from shareholders for a first period of 7 years, financially sustainable in the medium term.
- Because the industrial plan addresses integrally the 3 dimensions of the so called “knowledge triangle” (education, technology, business) since only combined and managed as one it can deliver the incremental and disruptive innovation we pursue.
Because the executors of the industrial plan are f...
- Because the executors of the industrial plan are first rank representatives of industry, research centres, universities and business schools, the actors of the knowledge triangle ⇒ normally the best do deliver the best results
- Because our portfolio of activities is much focused, looking for market impact:
- AdHoc Master of Sciences, PhD Schools or Long Life Learning (for professional in their mid careers), tailored to the market needs. With a blend of generic energy topics, specialization in at least one of the 6 focal topics of KIC InnoEnergy described above, hands on for 4 months in the industry, tuition in entrepreneurship and new management skills, finalizing with a guided business case on a real industrial need, from its design to launching its execution.
- Dedicated Research, Development & Innovation teams compiled from the key technicians of our top rank shareholders better fit to solve the singular energy requirements with disruptive market impact
- Business Creation Services, with which we transform an idea into a business, or help to create the workflow of “innovation to business” in existing institutions
- Because we measure our performance, upon clear measurable planned outputs: i.e in the first 5 years of the industrial plan, we will deliver inter alia:
- 1200 students, PhD and midcareer professionals trained in InnoEnergy Education programs
- 55 new products or services for the sustainable energy value chain
- 37 patents registered (of which 10 transferred to SME)
- 20 spin-offs/start-ups
KIC Innovation System
The innovation concept identifies and exploits the knowledge already created in research centres, companies and universities. It increases industrial involvement with universities and research centres.
- It is customer and market oriented.
- It is based on the idea of eco-innovation systems as collaborative networks taking advantage of proximity and close ties. This means that some activities are performed at KIC level, others at CC level and/or both
- It aims at disruptive innovation by applying:
- Open innovation philosophy: this implies that the different actors of the innovation chain will be present in the different joint innovation projects, the IPR policy will be flexible, the creation of new markets will be fostered through internal and external spin-offs and start-ups
- Cross innovation philosophy: learning and collaborating with other sectors can enhance creativity and the innovative level. This philosophy will be implemented through collaboration projects with other sectors
- It guarantees learning, development and sustainability through the internal training, development workshops and internal services.
- It creates knowledge in innovation management and innovation networks fields.
- It runs in parallel with the educational programs fostering the innovation and entrepreneurship culture and the competence building. Indeed both systems are interwoven.
