LyondellBasell has assembled a balanced, integrated product portfolio comprising five major business segments. Each plays a strategic role in creating stakeholder value.
Refining. LyondellBasell’s Refining segment produces gasoline, jet fuel, heating oil, ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel, lube oils, coke and sulfur from heavy, high-sulfur crude oil at one of North America's largest full-conversion refineries. Strategically located on the U.S. Gulf Coast near interstate pipelines and the Port of Houston, LyondellBasell’s Houston refinery benefits from access to cost-advantaged crudes and other feedstocks as well as multiple product markets.
Olefins and Polyolefins. LyondellBasell is the world’s largest producer of polypropylene and polypropylene compounds and a top worldwide producer of polyethylene, ethylene and propylene. We also produce significant quantities of other high-value specialty products such as Catalloy process resins and Polybutene-1 (PB-1). LyondellBasell manages its olefin and polyolefin business in two reportable segments, Olefins & Polyolefins -- Americas and Olefins & Polyolefins -- Europe, Asia and International.
Intermediates and Derivatives. LyondellBasell is a leading global producer and marketer of propylene oxide and its derivatives including propylene glycol, propylene glycol ethers and butanediol. We also produce and market products derived from co-products of the propylene oxide process. Among these are styrene, oxyfuels (MTBE/ETBE) and isobutylenes. This segment also includes acetyls and ethylene oxide-based chemicals. We believe our proprietary technologies, product integration and geographic presence provide us with a competitive cost advantage.
Technology. LyondellBasell develops and licenses industry-leading polyolefin process technologies and provides associated engineering and other services. Our Technology segment develops, manufactures and sells polyolefin catalysts. We market our process technologies and our polyolefin catalysts to external customers and also use them for our own manufacturing operations. We believe that our research and development activities deliver innovative and commercially relevant technologies at a competitive cost. Licensing these technologies has enabled us to invest in joint ventures in high-growth regions to broaden our global reach.
At LyondellBasell, we are dedicated to a strategy that we call Everyday Excellence, our back-to-basics approach to becoming the premier company in our industry.
We believe this requires flawless execution in six key areas:
- Operational excellence
- Cost reduction and revenue enhancement
- Capital discipline
- Portfolio management
- Performance culture
- Technology-driven growth
It’s not just about 'what' we want to accomplish, however; the 'how' – or the way we accomplish our goals – is equally important. The new LyondellBasell has an unwavering commitment to safety perfection, reliability and environmental stewardship and a dedication to the highest standards of ethics, fairness and respect for every employee. In addition, we’re building an organization that expects and rewards high performance, and we’ve created a compensation and incentive program that supports this goal.
Everyday Excellence is more than just our corporate strategy; it is a statement of our dedication to superior performance. Collectively, we have the opportunity to create chemical industry history and fulfill the true potential of LyondellBasell’s assets, technology and people.
We value excellence in everything we do.
Operational Excellence is LyondellBasell’s broadly institutionalized philosophy to achieve reliable and measurable performance that enables us to drive continuous improvement in every aspect of our business. This philosophy covers all aspect of Manufacturing including Health Safety and Environment, Quality, Reliability, Cost and Efficiency, People and Community.
In all, Operational Excellence encompasses more than 30 performance standards that cover specific areas of manufacturing, transportation, IT, research and development, commercial, supply chain, human resources and more. Operational Excellence also focuses on developing people to their fullest capability.
These components are closely related. For example, in general, the more reliable the plant, the safer it becomes. The more efficient the operation, the less raw materials and energy it consumes; the less waste it generates, the more we contribute to a sustainable future. Improved reliability and efficiency also have a direct, positive impact on our financial bottom line through additional product available for sale, savings in the cost of raw materials and energy, as well as reduced waste management and disposal costs.
Striking the right balance between knowledgeable people and high performance management systems, constitute Operational Excellence at LyondellBasell.
With a nearly 70-year legacy of game-changing innovation, our company has developed new products and technologies that serve as the bedrock of the chemical industry. Below are some of our key contributions.
Predecessor company scientists Karl Ziegler and Giulio Natta make breakthrough discoveries in the creation of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). PE and PP resins are used today to make numerous products, including automobile parts, surgical gowns, children’s toys, wind turbines and water pipes. They were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1963.
Hoechst, a predecessor company, initiated industrial-scale production of PE in Frankfurt, Germany.
Predecessor company, Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO), develops the PO/TBA process (propylene oxide with tertiary butyl alcohol as the co-product). PO is used in numerous applications including bedding, furniture, carpets and car seats. TBA and its derivatives, which includes oxyfuels, are used in high octane gasoline blending components, synthetic rubber and lubricant additives.
First Hostalen high density polyethylene (HDPE) process plant starts up.
Spheripol process, currently the most widely used polyolefins process technology, first introduced by predecessor company Montedison.
Basell completes start-up of the world’s largest low density polyethylene plant (LDPE) in Berre, France, with a single line capacity of 320,000 tons per year.
LyondellBasell begins construction of the first commercial Hyperzone PE plant in La Porte, Texas, utilizing the company’s new proprietary technology. HDPE plastics produced using the Hyperzone PE process technology exhibit enhanced characteristics including superior toughness properties that make end-use products less likely to break or tear. Potential end-use products include healthcare packaging, high pressure pipe, children’s toys, household bottles and intermediate bulk containers.
