History of OTT HydroMet
In 1873 Albert OTT founded the 'Mathematical-Mechanical Institut A. OTT' in Kempten, Germany. In the founding years, development was focused on mechanical water level recorders, hydrometric current meters and planimeters. Albert Ott spared no effort he travelled the world and introduced his instruments to an international expert audience, like he did at the World Exhibition 1880 in Melbourne in 1880. Five year later, Albert Ott developed and launched the first current meter. After the early death of Albert Ott, his brother Max and later the Swiss, Mr. Adolf Steis took over the ownership of the OTT company. In the following years the OTT company grew, and the name “OTT” began to develop into a worldwide brand. In 1920, the company moved to a new building in the center of Kempten, Germany.
The OTT company was the first non-governmental institution which got its own rating/calibration tank in 1922. The period '40s-50s-60s' was characterized by challenges, new developments and first steps into automated data processing technologies- to make this happen people with ideas were key. The Conzen-OTT 'train-timetable-calculation' instrument developed in the 40s was still used by the Deutsche Bahn until the 80s.
Founded in 1959 in Austin Texas by Bud Garner, the Hydrolab idea was to reverse the workflow in water analysis tasks. Instead of transporting samples from the sampling location to the laboratory, Hydrolab sensors brought the lab to the site. OTT introduced its mechanic “punched tape water level recorder” for remote data transmission in 1965. The information age had begun...
With the OTT Allgomatic, an Innovative solution in electronic data processing was launched in 1970. It was capable of electronic data recording, data storage and data transmission. Eight years later, an OTT Allgomatic Desk Version was released, which was easily upgradable at any time and was not only used in the field of hydrology but also for meteorological and environmental applications. The OTT Hydrus datalogger introduced in 1985 rang in the new era of compact loggers.
The year 1990 brought the OTT HydroSens, opening a new chapter in the successful OTT data logger history - thanks to the CAN-fieldbus system, the exchange of data became considerably more efficient.
Two years later, Guenther Walcher and Lix Paulian founded the Adcon Telemetry GmbH in Vienna. With systems for monitoring, transmitting and evaluating of data, Adcon was active solely in the still young but strongly growing market of wireless telemetry. New premises directly located at the river Iller - the perfect place for a hydrometry company – were established in 1993. Only few months after the move to the new premises, the new, modern rating tank was inaugurated. For the exact calibration of current meters data were now transferred contact-free.
In 1994, OTT Pluvio – the first precipitation gauge with integrated data processing based on the weighing principle was released. In the same year in October, a Spanish OTT representation was founded with OTT Medioambiente. Operating from Madrid with its own sales and service office, the OTT subsidiary is the direct contact for customers on the Iberian Peninsula as well as in Angola and Cape Verde.
In the new millennium, the Datalogger OTT Logosens with flexible sensor connection concept set a new benchmark in the field of environmental monitoring.
Hydrolab and OTT became a part of the Danaher Corporation in the year 2002. Both companies have continued working as independent businesses.
In 2004, the new Hydrolab multiparameter sondes were launched. At the same time, the field 'water quality measurement' was added to the OTT product portfolio.
In 2011, ADCON Telemetry also became a part of the Danaher Corporation. From there on, three innovative companies join their forces in the OTT Hydromet Group: OTT, Hydrolab and ADCON Telemetry. Sharing a common vision these companies are providing innovative solutions and measuring systems for hydrometric, meteorology and environmental monitoring. In 2016, the environmental measurement technology supplier Lufft was added to the new company group, followed by Kipp & Zonen in 2018 complementing the portfolio with solar radiation sensors.

The certificate confirms that our products and services meet our customers’ quality standards as well as statutory and regulatory requirements. Naturally, we only work with ISO-certified suppliers.
Kaizen – striving for continuous improvement:
We strive to constantly improve the existing status of our standards, such as safety, quality and supply capability. Just as with our products, we regularly scrutinize the processes in the company and analyze these for potential improvements. Here, managers and employees work closely together. They identify the potential for improvements, agree on goals, formulate action plans and initiate the necessary measures. The sub-goals achieved are constantly reviewed in order to take countermeasures in good time if the need arises. In this way, we optimize not only internal processes, but also product and service quality - and thus the satisfaction of employees and customers.
