Pipeline Induction Heat Ltd (PIH)
The pipeline construction industry is characterized by rapid advances in welding, non-destructive testing, and pipe lay technology. A truly global company, PIH provides services to pipeline construction contractors working on offshore lay barges and onshore spoolbases as well as on overland pipelines. We continually work with our customers and coating material suppliers to develop innovative and relevant technologies that fulfill and exceed today’s demanding field joint coating requirements. Corrosion poses the single biggest threat to the integrity of the world’s pipelines—anticipating these problems requires PIH to undertake research and development initiatives that provide our clients with solution-based services that include application equipment, trained and experienced technicians, and suitable materials. We also understand the necessity of working alongside both main contractors and owners to provide total project service.

About us
Hence there are ever-increasing challenges for coating applicators as offshore cycle times reduce, onshore pipelines are laid in more demanding conditions, and in all cases the bare steel section at welded joints becomes larger to accommodate automated welding and inspection. Compound this with stringent specifications for pipeline operating conditions and it’s easy to see why the industry is focused on proper and efficient application of field joint coating materials.
On time, on budget, and to specification are the key parameters in the PIH business philosophy. This philosophy, however, never overshadows the primarily important factors of health and safety at our worksites. Operating a fully accredited health and safety management system that complements our quality management system, PIH is focused on achieving zero accidents both in the field and throughout the business operation.
Philosophy
PIH strives to create coating systems that are efficient and easy to use. With automation, the task of the coating operator is made less burdensome and the risk of error or accident is significantly reduced as compared to a manual process. Using innovative technology in our coating apparatus also means that consumption and waste are reduced as much as possible.
PIH has developed coating machines that reduce overspray and coating material losses during application. This philosophy has been proven to promote a healthy working atmosphere and virtually eliminates any environmental impact.
At PIH, we understand that the foundation of success is built upon sound commercial management, operational efficiency, quality assurance, and most importantly safety and environmental awareness.
PIH operates what is probably the world’s largest fleet of specialist field joint coating equipment including:
- Induction generators and coils
- Inverters
- On-pipe powder coating equipment
- PP and PE flame spray equipment
- Pumping equipment for injection molding polyurethane
- Heat-assisted polypropylene (and polyethylene) tape wrap equipment
All project-specific equipment is made in our UK workshop where a team of highly skilled tradesmen work to produce equipment to the very highest standards.
Reputation
PIH is a world leader in the provision of specialist field joint coating services and is particularly proud of our long and successful track record in spoolbase and offshore field joint coating activities as well as in the onshore pipeline construction sector.
PIH has long been associated with providing onshore and offshore services for all major pipeline construction contractors and has earned a reputation for quality, performance, and, of course, reliability in the services we provide.
Safety Assurance
On all of our projects PIH is fully committed to providing all involved personnel with a safe working environment. Prior to the commencement of any project, HSE plans are submitted and risk assessments are carried out to ensure that all potential risks are identified and the correct actions are taken to prevent any incidents from occurring. Such actions are:
- Training personnel
- Provision of correct PPE equipment
- Provision of the necessary materials and equipment to deal with any incidents
- Consultation with licensed waste disposal contractors
PIH has a long and proud safety record with many letters of commendation and safety awards. We have been awarded the IPLOCA site safety award three times and were runners-up in the IPLOCA environment award.
