Innovative from the Very Outset
Heinz G. Lossau, a physicist, realized very early on the potential lasers harbor for measuring technology. Back in 1967, shortly after laser light was put to commercial use, he founded the company Polytec in Waldbronn, Baden-Württemberg, at the foot of the Black Forest near Karlsruhe – and this is still where the company headquarters are located even today.
As a pioneer in commercial laser technology, Polytec offered products and solutions for industry and research for the first time ever in Germany. The contactless measuring technology formed the starting point for a multitude of developments. And that’s why Heinz G. Lossau set up his very own Development department in addition to the sales facilities shortly after founding the company. And he did so with great success, too. Indeed, in 1971, Polytec unveiled the first-ever “made in Germany” optical Fourier spectrometer for the far-infrared range. Soon after, it started developing the first-ever Polytec laser vibrometer, which is a success story that continues even up to the present day. Nowadays, our customers buy Polytec products through subsidiaries in the UK, France, Japan, China, Singapore and the US, as well as through a global network of sales partners. Polytec has been ISO-certified since 1994, most recently pursuant to DIN EN ISO 9001:2015.
Quality & Innovation
For over 40 years Polytec has provided high-technology, laser-based measurement solutions to researchers and engineers. Our commitment is to provide the most precise and reliable optical instruments and sensors available for non-contact measurement, setting Polytec apart from the competition as the gold standard in the design and manufacture of vibrometer and velocimeter systems. Our innovations answer many pressing manufacturing and engineering challenges.
History
Polytec was founded in 1967 to distribute commercial laser technology to industrial and research markets. Building on the company’s early success, Polytec began to develop and manufacture innovative laser-based test and measurement instruments in the 1970’s. These products have become known around the world as the gold standard in non-contact, laser-based measurement of vibration, speed and length.
Early Fiber-optical Vibrometer
Advanced product development remains a core strategic activity at Polytec with new electro-optical systems being designed for applications such as analytical process measurement, noise analysis, and factory automation.
In addition, Polytec continues to develop its key business structure through critical technology acquisitions and focused spin-offs. Some of the most recent highlights include:
In 2005, Polytec PT GmbH Polymere Technologien was founded as a spin-off, with over 30 years of know how in the supply and application of high tech adhesives and silicones in demanding electronic, optical and medical industries.
In 2008, Polytec integrated THôT Technologies into Polytec LLC - Disk & Drive Measurement Solutions, a new company delivering critical and enabling metrology for next generation disk drives.
In 2008, LATAB was acquired and became a member of the Polytec organization. LATAB's early entry into the LED illumination market has produced the broadest and most flexible product mix for technical applications.
Research & Development
By continuously investing in R&D and collaborating with research institutes, Polytec remains at the forefront of laser and optical measurement technologies. This results in unique and innovative ideas that produce world-class non-contact measurement solutions for our customers' critical applications.
Polytec's R&D department is staffed with 50 employees covering many disciplines. This team is dedicated to 'Advancing Measurements by Light' by developing new technologies, electronics, software, optics and support documentation. Research areas are laser vibrometry, laser velocimetry, video microscopy, NIR spectrometry and surface metrology. Polytec is actively maintaining a close partnership with universities and technical associations while participating in both national and international research projects and in scientific networks.
