Sheiiba provides companies with the tools to share best practice know-how in health & safety and to compare safety performance with other organisations. Founded in 1997, sheiiba is the Safety, Health and Environment Intra Industry Benchmarking Association. HSE practitioners from around 250 leading companies from 40 sectors have used sheiiba to improve company practices by adopting and adapting what has been proven to work elsewhere. Sheiiba saves health and safety professionals from reinventing the wheel, providing new routes to improving processes and ultimately, performance.
- anonymously put their own questions to the wider group and receive responses from others who can help
- view an archive of 650 questions and some 2000 responses categorised into over 150 separate topics.
- Download information from a library of 1500 original company documents, standards and guideline.
- Input accident data into the performance charting tool and view their performance relative to others.
The benefits are that members can:
- Network with professional counterparts.
- Cross compare with others’ processes and check that their own standards are at least as good as if not better than others’ and if not , use the experience of fellow members to improve them.
- Draw-down know-how as required and learn from organisations that have implemented processes, saving them from conceiving, developing and testing home-grown ideas.
- Compare accident rates with others to establish relative performance either by whole company or by business process.
As one of our members said: “Sheiiba has proven itself time and again to be the best source of ideas and information on improving Health and Safety management that we have come across. The service is well conceived, well delivered and is excellent value'
Companies join sheiiba to take advantage of the depth and quality of Health, Safety and Environmental information immediately available to them at minimal cost. Every day our members log on to search for information that will help them find new and better ways to manage H, S & E.
Sheiiba provides a variety of tools to deliver this, including a Q & A tool which allows users to anonymously pose questions to the wider group and receive direct responses from those who can help. Often attached to these are company documents, standards and guidelines which enquirers can adapt or adopt as they see fit.
After ten years sheiiba can now boast the most comprehensive online library of documents available from the UK’s leading companies. The ability to connect directly with other members also provides an extensive professional network. Questions and documents are organised by topic, so for example a search for Stress will produce 11 questions plus their answers and 37 documents, from companies ranging from British Airways, the London Borough of Ealing, to Rio Tinto and Zurich Insurance.
If members can’t find what they want – they just ask.
Members can elect whether to appear anonymously or with their company name visible. Also produced on demand are sector-specific charts where a number of companies agree to participate. Any trade association can use sheiiba’s performance function for a nominal charge. Our systems allow us to use any rate for benchmarking.
Business Process Benchmarking
Many organisations complain of the difficulty of finding true benchmarking partners as they regard themselves either as unique or because they are involved in so many different activities. However, many of these share common business activities or functions with others and this presents a good opportunity for like-with-like benchmarking. For example: call centres, field and sales staff branch networks and office safety. Sheiiba’s performance element now offers members the opportunity not just to benchmark whole company performance at the year-end but also to benchmark performance relating to a specific processes.
