Snowflake Power operates a 24-megawatt biomass power plant located in Snowflake, Arizona approximately 180 miles Northeast of Phoenix. The plant began commercial operations in June 2008 following a 22-month construction period. It is comprised of a Babcock & Wilcox fluidized bed boiler and General Electric steam turbine-generator. The plant is located on the site of a recycled paper manufacturing facility that is owned and operated by Catalyst Paper Corporation. Snowflake procures from Catalyst biomass fuel in the form of paper sludge. The boiler burns a mix of paper sludge and woody biomass. The plant has access to abundant biomass resources from the millions of acres of forestland within a 75 mile radius, which is cultivated in accordance with stewardship programs. The plant sells 100% of its electricity and Renewable Energy Certificates (`REC`s) under two separate power purchase agreements. The plant generates enough electricity to power approximately 18,000 – 20,000 homes.
