Surface Modification Systems (SMS) is a materials company specializing in the manufacture of rotary sputtering targets and custom materials development. SMS also provides and develops coatings to improve service life of components in severe, corrosive conditions in solar, glass, SEMI and industrial applications. Total control of SMS own fabrication, material development, full metallurgical lab with ISO and FAA certification allow rapid turn key development and production of material in the required finished form factor.
SMS Inc. was founded in 1993 as a consulting firm focusing on materials engineering and coatings research. Early success in improving performance of oil field fluid handling systems led to expansion into manufacturing operations. SMS quickly grew into a full service job shop specializing in coatings, machining, and grinding. Currently, SMS has two facilities encompassing over 37,000 Sq. Ft. offering high-end manufacturing, world-class quality control and industry-leading R&D.
SMS is one of the most comprehensive high performance coating companies in the western United States. Our thermal spray capabilities include two Vacuum Plasma Spray systems (VPS/LPPS), High Velocity Oxygen Fuel spray system (HVOF), several variants of Air Plasma Spray systems (APS), Combustion Flame Spray systems for powder and wire, Twin Wire Arc Spray system (TWAS) as well as Cold Spray. A total of eight robot-automated spray booths house the equipment.
SMS has a variety of reactors and offers an extensive line of CVD based diffusion coatings that include Borides, Aluminides, Chromides, Silicides and Carbides (including Vanadium Carbide). A large Electron Beam evaporation system is available for Physical Vapor Deposition (EBPVD).
SMS thrives on applications engineering based on fundamental research and process development. Over the years we have developed and optimized many unique processes making them suitable for production. Some such development includes Sprayforming long tubes (up to 20 feet), Electrospark deposition, Atmospheric Athermal Plasma Deposition and Sol-Gel deposition of functional oxides.
Some of our recent developments include processes for thin film (nano to micro scale) deposition of coatings such as transparent and semi-transparent Yttria and Alumina. Capabilities exist for developing such complex oxide films and coatings for advanced applications.
