United Manufacturing International 2000 GAC 400 is a granular activated carbon for the removal of dissolved organic compounds from water and wastewater as well as industrial and food processing streams. These contaminants include taste and odor compounds, organic color, total organic carbon (TOC), industrial organic compounds such as TCE and PCE, and PFAS. This activated carbon is made from select grades of bituminous coal through a process known as re-agglomeration to produce a high activity, durable, granular product capable of withstanding the abrasion associated with repeated back-washing, hydraulic transport, and reactivation for reuse. The raw coal is mined and subsequently manufactured into GAC in the United States to ensure the highest quality and consistency in the finished product. Activation is carefully controlled to produce a significant volume of both low and high energy pores for effective adsorption of a broad range of high and low molecular weight organic contaminants.
GAC 400 is formulated to comply with all the applicable provisions of the AWWA Standard for Granular Activated Carbon (B604) and Food Chemicals Codex. This product may also be certified to the requirements of NSF/ANSI 61 for use in municipal water treatment facilities.

The Growing Need For PFAS Treatment
A recent report by the Environmental Working Group cites the latest statistics on PFAS’ reach into everyday American life — drinking water systems serving an estimated 19 million people, in at least 610 locations across 43 states are known to be contaminated with one or more of the thousands of known PFAS compounds. Based on their widespread use across various industries, it is no surprise that many of these sites are associated with military bases, airports, industrial/chemical facilities, and firefighter training locations. The EPA has established a health advisory level of 70 parts per trillion (ppt) of combined PFAS compounds in drinking water due to links with cancer, developmental effects, liver damage, thyroid issues, and more. Recently, the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry proposed a more aggressive recommendation of 7 ppt for PFOS and 11 ppt for PFOA.  ResinTech SIR-110-HP is a chloride form PFAS, nitrate and perchlorate selective strong base anion resin. SIR-110-HP has unique functionality that greatly increases selectivity for nitrate while greatly decreasing the interference from sulfate ions. ResinTech SIR-110-HP has the highest possible selectivity for perchlorate when compared to other similar resins. SIR-110-HP is intended for all perchlorate and PFAS removal applications, and where the highest possible affinity for nitrate is desired. The City of Stuart job allowed the resin providers to put a foot of carbon as the first layer of the media. The water has a high organic content, so the thinking was the carbon would protect the resin.  

The vessels had sample ports at 25%, 50%, and 75% levels of the bed. Total bed height was limited to 5 feet.

Calgon used a foot of F-400 and then 4 ft of resin

Evoqua used 5 feet of Dow PSR2 resin

ResinTech used a foot of AGC-30-CS-AW carbon over 4 ft of SIR-110-HP resin

Purolite used a foot of organic scavenging resin over 4 ft of PFAS resin.

Our coconut shell carbon, which we acid wash and pH buffer in NJ, outperformed the Calgon F-400 coal based carbon. Big surprise to everyone.

The Purolite setup performed the worst.

UMI-2000 is the manufacturer's representative in the USA of this new Honeycomb Activated Carbon product that has revolutionized vapor phase adsorption applications in industry - including handling of petroleum fuel products at gasoline bulk terminals and refineries.  A patented process produces this extruded carbon block product with superior adsorptive capacity, high Butane Working Capacity and easily desorbed with heat and vacuum.  Suitable for VOC adsorption from paint spray booths, odor control at WWTPs, Air Stripper off-gas etc.

 

Consider the following features and advantages of using Honeycomb carbon block over traditional pellet and granular activated carbons:

 

1. The honeycomb structure has a pore size range of 10-2,000 Angstroms and a BET surface area range of ~200-3,000 sq.m/gm!
2. The honeycomb carbon block is desorbed with liquid ring vacuum pumps and a small quantity of heated condensable compound free air - the adsorbed compounds are stripped!
3. The pressure drop at a given linear gas velocity for Honeycomb carbon block containing 200 cpsi (cells per square inch) is 11 times lower than densely packed 4mm pellet extruded activated carbon!
4. Honeycomb structures may be pressed into cubes, round cylinders, oval, square and rectangular cylinders!
5. The shorter distances for internal diffusion mass transfer for honeycomb carbon leads to faster saturation and desorption rates and thus shorter cycle times!
6. Honeycomb adsorbent can be purged of fuel compounds and solvents using a vacuum above 100 mbar!
7. Honeycomb carbon has a much higher specific surface area compared to other carbon structures!
8. Honeycomb carbon block has a lower level of carbon attrition and dust-related problems due to carbon attrition are minimized!
9. Honeycomb carbon block is available in 100, 200, 300 or 400 cpsi!
10. Honeycomb block carbon is only 15% more expensive than 4mm pellets and has 3 times the surface area for adsorption!!
