Founded in 2003, WFS launched the world’s first commercially available underwater radio modem in 2006. The same year, the company was announced as the Overall Winner of the UK MoD’s top innovation award. WFS’s Broadband Data Link, now known as seatooth® S300, was launched in January 2007 and was followed later that year by a launch of the world’s first dual technology Radio Acoustic Modem, RAM-300 (now known as seatooth+acoustic).That commitment to developing new technology was recognised the following year, when the company was awarded the New Technology Award at the Offshore Technology Conference in Houston. “Industry recognition was important for us given we had spent our early years being told that there were no practical applications for the technology we were developing,” explains Hyland.“So to receive the award confirmed that our instincts had been correct.” Following the recognition, the business has continued to grow and now provides solutions from concept right through to project delivery, offshore installation and support. It has 65 granted patents and a further 250 patent applications to its name.

WFS’s disruptive technology is revolutionizing control and communications in underwater and underground environments. Underwater radio technology has the distinct advantage that it will operate in adverse water conditions, is unaffected by acoustic noise, is free from multipathing problems and that the Doppler effects are minimal. A hybrid of radio and acoustic technology can extend the capability of both seatooth® and a conventional acoustic modem, offering a robust solution for subsea challenges in deep water. Critically, WFS’s products support data transmission across the water/air and ground/air boundaries, penetrating the surf zone, ice, harbor walls, and other materials normally considered impenetrable.

It has also helped us reach industry heavyweights whose adoption of this technology will mean growing to a multi-billion dollar market.”
