EHS for Power Plants Applications

  • Automated solutions for the power plant inlet water dredging

Liquid Waste Technology’s dredging systems are used for power plant cooling water dredge applications. LWT’s dredges are designed to remove the sand, silt and sediment that build up in reception ponds and inlet channels to power plants. Each dredging system is custom built for the inlet water application, including the level of automation, removal rate and dredging depth required for each job.

  • Primary air control for coal-fired power plants

Power Generation Combustion Air Measurements: The need for accurate, repeatable & reliable combustion air measurements in power generation plants is critical to efficient operation and safety throughout the entire facility and processes. Coal-fired power plant applications pose a number of challenges to obtaining these critical flow measurements includ¬ing large ducts, limited metering runs, poor velocity and temperature profiles, high vibration, temperatures up to 750° F and dirty `Fly Ash` laden air.

  • Power Generation

Combustion turbines A gas turbine, also called a combustion turbine, is a type of internal combustion engine. It has an upstream rotating compressor coupled to a downstream turbine, and a combustion chamber in-between. The basic operation of the gas turbine is similar to that of the steam power plant except that air is used instead of water. The turbine shaft energy is used to drive the compressor and other devices such as an electric generator that may be coupled to the shaft. The energy that is not used for shaft work comes out in the exhaust gases, so these have either a high temperature or a high velocity. A catalyst is often used to treat these exhaust gases to comply with emissions regulations. EmeraChem has installed OEM and after-market catalyst in over 240 applications

  • Moisture Monitoring for SF6 / Air Circuit Breakers

SF6 (sulphur hexafluoride ) or air is used as an insulation gas in circuit breakers . Excess moisture in these gases causes arcing, which can trip the circuit breaker and cut off power to the distribution network. More seriously, such arcing can lead to physical damage of equipment and, on occasion, death of plant operatives (please ask for our case study on circuit breakers).

    Water treatment for power plants

The process of electricity generation from fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas is water-intensive. Between 40-50% of all water abstracted and used in developed countries is used in the generation of electricity. Thus, a reliable, abundant and predictable source of raw water supply to a power plant is a critical factor in site selection. Water supplies are required to provide various process waters for the following essential main purposes such as make-up water, cooling water for steam turbine condensers, and auxiliary plant cooling water.

The primary application of modern water treatment technology is to maintain the integrity and performance of the power plant. Critical plant applications have water purity or conditioning requirements that must be adhered to for safe, reliable and efficient power generation.

Experience has shown that integration of water technology treatments with power plant design can be very important in reducing operational problems and component failures

At power plant worldwide there are increasing limitations on water availability and environmental restrictions on discharges. This is expected to promote measures for water conservation and to have an increasing influence on water treatment decisions. At power plant, the recycling of internal wastewater streams can extend from the recovery of individual high-quality waste streams, which can be reused either directly or after only limited treatment, through to the development of fully integrated water/wastewater treatment systems for zero liquid discharge. However, the application of reuse schemes requires site-specific assessment, as not all waters may be viable options for recovery.

    FEDI - Electrodeionization

The Fractional Electrodeionization (FEDI) process is an advancement of conventional EDI. The patented dual voltage process allows for a higher flexibility and tolerance to inlet water conditions, thus lowering the risk of scaling, and improving the plant’s design economics and reliability. By incorporating a two-stage separation process with different voltages the FEDI® process is able to: Achieve a higher hardness tolerance by having distinctly different concentrate chambers with separate reject streams and thus reducing the potential of hardness scaling. Optimize power consumption by using higher electrical current only where required. Ensure the best water quality, continuously & consistently by removing a major part of the deionization load in the ‘hardness removal zone’, while residual ionic impurities are effectively removed in the ‘silica removal zone’, which stays in a polishing mode.

Reliable Shredding Technology for Refuse Derived Fuels (RDF)

Our shredding solutions enable you to optimally recycle waste into substitute fuels / alternative fuels and ensure high quality by producing a homogeneous granulate free of foreign objects. The goal of recycling is to use the valuable energy contained in the waste and to substitute the use of fossil fuels. During the recycling process the portions with a high calorific value are separated from the commercial and industrial waste and turned into a marketable product. Depending on the calorific value and the granular size, these fuels are used in fluidised bed combustion, cement plants and substitute fuel power plants.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) applications

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is an emerging method of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of power plants. In a process called ‘scrubbing’, the carbon dioxide emissions can be absorbed into chemical solvents consisting of amines or carbonates. Scrubbing is a well-established method of carbon capture, with virtually every commercial CO2 capture plant in operation using this process. In the process, the first step is the removal of impurities from the flue gas, such as hydrocarbons and oxides of both nitrogen and sulfur (NOx and SOx). Next the purified gas is passed through an absorption column filled with the chemical scrubbing solvent. The solvent reacts with the carbon dioxide and selectively absorbs it from the gas stream. When CO2-rich solvent is heated, the carbon dioxide is released as a nearly pure gas.

Agitation and mixing solutions for flue gas desulfurization

FGD (Flue Gas Desulfurization) involves the treatment of flue gas from coal fired power plants.  The main goal is to remove sulfur, particulates, and other chemicals such as mercury from the flue gas prior to environmental release.  Governmental regulations by the EPA put limits on the amount of impurities which can be released into the air.   The use of mixers to clean and scrub the flue gas is utilized to help power companies meet permitted limits on the release of controlled substances.

  • Wireless multiple parameter monitoring

Monitoring multiple sensing points including fill level, pH, conductivity, and flow—often from varied locations in a large water treatment plant—can be a challenge. With four analogue inputs, a single SureCross Node can easily centralize and transmit critical monitoring information from multiple Sensors or controllers. Banner’s unique power management capability enables a single Node equipped with a FlexPower™ optimized QT50U or T30UX ultrasonic analogue sensor (level detection) to operate for years on a single DX81 battery power supply.

  • HCl Monitoring in Air

Hydrogen chloride (HCl) is a colorless, sometimes slightly yellow, gas. It is an undesired environmental component that may be damaging to workers and the surroundings. Exposure limits have thus been established by industries to make sure that the workers operate in a safe environment. HCl monitoring is especially required for incinerators, coal-fired power plants, aluminum recycling and cement plants. Unisearch offers a reliable and easy-to-use HCl analyzer – the TDLAS-based LasIR system. Studies have shown that TDLAS equipment provides data that is more accurate than conventional gas monitoring equipment. When calibrated for HCl monitoring, TDLAS is able to detect this gas among other gases present in the area and provide continuous updates with regards to the changes in its concentration.
