Fuel Standards Applications

  • Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) & Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF)

A full-scale Gasplasma® plant can make its own RDF from MSW/Commercial Waste. The waste is brought directly into a fuel preparation hall at the front of the building. Inside the fuel preparation hall there is industry standard equipment that can recover glass, metals and hard plastics from the wastes for recycling. The remaining waste is then dried and shredded to make a Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) for the Gasplasma® energy from waste process. Clients who already produce RDF may not require a fuel preparation hall. APP can design a plant without this facility, accepting the RDF directly from the client. Secondary Recovered Fuel or Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) is often confused with Refuse Derived Fuel because they are similar in nature. However, SRF is produced to reach a clearly defined standard such as CEN/343 ANAS whereas RDF is not.

  • High performance separation system for fuel gas streams

Fuel Gas Streams are frequently contaminated with liquid aerosols. The liquid exists as a stable and persistent “smoke” in the gas stream. The liquid contaminant can enter the gas stream through any one of a variety of events including – phase separation and condensation, compressor lube-oils from compression, chemical addition to pipelines (including corrosion inhibitors), and entrainment from overheads of contact towers.

Measurement of hydrogen in fuels for oil & gas industry

The combustion properties of fuels are key to the efficient and safe operation of engines used in machinery and plant. One important way to measure the combustion properties of a fuel is by its hydrogen content. The measurement of hydrogen content is widely used for the characterisation of aviation fuel but with the increasing costs of all fuels and the greater incentives for fuel adulteration, this test is increasingly being adopted for non-aviation applications. Our benchtop NMR analyser MQC-23 system is widely used for the measurement of hydrogen in fuels in accordance with ASTM D7171-05.

  • Cetane Number of Diesel Fuels #3010

The Cetane number of a diesel fuel is a measure of the ignition properties and is an important specification that must be met during fuel production. The traditional laboratory method for Cetane number determination is the knock engine method in which the fuel is burned and its combustion characteristics compared to known standards. This method is time and labor intensive, and provides no ability for real time control of production. This note discusses the use of Guided Wave hardware and software tools for the measurement of Cetane number in diesel fuel using fiber optic-based, Near-Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. NIR is applied in real-time directly in process monitoring or as a laboratory procedure. In either case NIR is a time and money saving alternative to traditional methods.

  • Water removal filtration

SAF is the key component for a wide range of enhanced nonwoven filter media fabrics that are designed for the removal of water and particulates from aviation fuel, automotive diesel and a wide range of oils. Such fabrics help reduce problems associated with water contamination in such situations. Its versatility gives rise to cost savings over traditional cellulosic-based absorption media, while offering full compliance potential to stringent international filtration standards – particularly in the aviation fuel and hydraulic oil markets. Applications: A significant reason for the majority of oil and fuel system failures is the presence of high water levels in dissolved, dispersed and free water. SAF-based filter media fabrics can remove both dispersed and free water to very low ppm levels at industry leading rates. This leads to reduced fuel and oil degradation and provides the required filter quality for efficient machine operation.

Processing of Alternative Fuels for the energy industry

RDF is a fuel that is normally produced from waste with high calorific value. The original waste comes from households, industry and commerce and is processed for energy extraction; it is meant for co-incineration plants and replaces standard fuels (e.g. coal) in production plants for cement, power plants or other co-incineration plants.
