This course provides participants with the background, understanding, and techniques to assess groundwater resources using a wide variety of information. Basic principles start from the point of geological mapping, which is re-interpreted using hydrostratigraphic classification to help to define hydrogeological units. Conceptual modelling approaches are used to interpret the boundary conditions affecting groundwater systems, including interactions between groundwater and surface water bodies in the context of catchments, and quantification of recharge. Methods of presenting and interpreting natural groundwater chemistry are introduced within an integrated approach to resource evaluation. Concepts and techniques for assessing potential for ground source heat and geothermal energy are introduced.
