IES Webinar: Identification and Analysis of Petroleum Hydrocarbons and Tars: In Both Solid
Until recently, identifying and analysing for TPH, tars etc. has relied on laboratory GCs. However, measuring fluorescence across the UV and visible range can, in three minutes, identify and analyse petroleum or coal tar derived hydrocarbon contamination of liquids and solids immediately on site or in a laboratory. This method provides quantitative values for TPH, DRO, GRO as well as total BTEX, total PAHs and Benzo(a)pyrene in soil, groundwater and waste streams. It also measures the percentage of coal tar in asphalt and similar materials but “ignores” natural organics such as leaf mold, which other methods may include in TPH values. In this webinar, Peter Fleming, Sales Consultant at QROS Ltd, will discuss how getting accreditation for mobile methods is being overcome by UKAS accreditation of static units and the support we are getting from the Environment Agency.

About the speaker
Following graduation, Peter worked in laboratories but soon became bored with the repetitive nature of the work so moved to the sales of laboratory instruments and then environmental monitors. He became involved with the sales of PIDs and the much underrated Photovac Voyager portable GC and had his first experience of trudging around landfill sites delimiting contamination. Subsequently, Peter became involved with Air Quality Monitoring including 12 years at TRL developing their AQ Monitoring business. Since redundancy in December 2015, Peter has been self-employed on a number of short-term contracts but a conference presentation by Colin Green, now with QROS, struck a chord. Peter knew how valuable it was to have laboratory grade data from portable onsite analysers and here was the QED doing what had only been possible with a lab GC. Peter joined QROS in September 2016.
