Petroleum in the Enviroment 2017

This course provides an insight into the environmental problems associated with the production and use of petroleum and what can be done to ameliorate them. Topics covered include the sources and compositions of petroleum and naturally occurring hydrocarbons in the environment; polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, their origins, properties and effects; methods for measuring hydrocarbon toxicity and the effects of hydrocarbon pollution; oil spills and methods for their remediation; case studies of actual oil spills; effects of public perception on actions for the treatment of petroleum pollution; atmospheric pollutants arising from the use of petroleum products as fossil fuels.
