    The mining industry uses chemicals as ‘flotation’ agents in the recovery of sulphide minerals containing metallic elements (e.g., copper, nickel, silver, gold) from ore slurries. Sodium ethyl xanthate (SEX) is one of most common flotation agents, and it decomposes to form ethanol, carbon disulfide CS2, and Carbonyl Sulfide COS. These harmful gaseous compounds must be monitored from the indoor air at the enriching plant.

    Analysing preservatives in recycled and treated wood for wood industry

    Treated wood for disposal or recycling is tested for hazardous components to establish the relevant methods of wood disposal that can be applied. There is a range of preservative solutions used for pressure treated wood including Copper Azole, Pentachlorphenol (Penta) and Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA), all of which can be identified by analysis. While untreated wood degrades within three to five years, the wood that is pressure treated with these kind of preservatives can last up to sixty years!
